Paul George gets max extension

Woj over at Yahoo says both sides have agreed, but it hasn't been finalized. 5 years, 90 mil. Had he not signed the deal, he would have entered restricted free agency. Indy would have matched any offer regardless. The move isn't surprising but just once I'd like to see a star just accept the 1 year qualifying offer to avoid restricted FA and hit unrestricted FA the following year. It'd be interesting to see how much more they could make. The risk is you play that one year with a lower salary to get a larger contract with freedom of movement the following summer. Plus, restricted FA is bullshit. NBAPA got hosed for ever allowing it.

It's still in the making. Although the article doesn't mention it, I've read that it's actually 5yr 80mil with incentives to make it 90mil. His new contract won't kick in until after this season.

"Pacers president Larry Bird said the team has not yet reached an agreement on a contract extension with All-Star forward Paul George, but hinted that it was close.

“That’s why I’m not playing golf today,” Bird said during an appearance prior to the Pacers Foundation golf outing at Brickyard Crossing. “I’m going back to the office to work on it.”

Yahoo! Sports reported late Sunday night that George and the team are finalizing a 5-year, $90-plus million contract and it likely will be announced this week. George told the Indianapolis Star last week he plans to sign a contract sometime before the season opener on Oct. 29.

The Pacers open training camp is Saturday. Bird said he had not seen the Yahoo report and declined to comment on it. When asked if the length and financial figures were correct, he replied: “Never heard that. If I did, I wish it was my number.”

George’s contract expires after this season and the Pacers would be able to match any offer he receives as a restricted free agent. Bird hopes the security of getting a long-term deal out of the way appeals to George and they can agree to an extension soon.

“The number has to be a number we both like,” he said. “That's what it's all about. It's all about money. He wants to be here. He's told me that a million times. We want him here. Let's just find a number that works for both.”

Some may think he's getting overpaid, but he just turned 23 has a lot of upside. Not sure though what happens with Granger back in the lineup. George will probably go back to 2 guard in which he wasn't as effective as he was last season as SF.
