I'm gonna say Patton is a better receiver. I'm not actually a huge fan of Ellington's as a receiver. I'm not a huge fan of his as a return man either; seems pretty average at both (but we don't exactly have Devin Hester right now, so maybe he'll get some play there).

Ellington's not really THAT fast. In fact, Patton might be about as fast as he.

This pick really surprised me....I'd rather have Patton mainly because he has a year in the system. I expect a jump in output in year 2. He showed a few flashes of brilliance last year.

Can Patton catch punts? Because he may need to if he wants to increase his chances of being on the 53 man roster once Week 1 arrives.

I don't think Ellington did much on punts in college. He said as much in his teleconference. He was a kickoff guy. I think a couple of the CBs we drafted have return experience as well.

I will be very surprised if Ellington makes the 53 man roster. I'm really excited to see the trash talking between Sherman and Stevie though. I'm looking forward to it so much, I'm going to force him into the convo. He use to call out Revis and get the best of him at his peak, the guy is not afraid of a challenge!

Patton is a better reciever at this point. Ellington is much more limited.

Patton by a mile for WR.

But Ellington will be the return specialist.

2012 the Hawks trashed the Bills 50-17...

But Johnson had a nice stat line- 8 115 14.4 1 25 12

Ellington has only been a WR for three years. I would love to see how he develops because the talent is there IMO...if we had a competent WR coach, Ellington could have a shot of being a solid slot WR...

I like Patton as well, moreso his passion and excitability as he seems to rule love the game. It just hasn't translated onto the field based on injury or lack of production. But it's only been one year. We'll see!

I'm scared to have a guy back there who's not used to returning punts (Ellington).
I'd rather have James back there, at least he didn't cough up the ball.

Brandon Lloyd may be out, We picked up speed everywhere, Fangio must be pretty excited and hopefully some more blitzes/pass rush we will need it this year!

I would say Patton, but he will have a difficult time seeing the field with Crabtree, Boldin, and Johnson. Maybe the Niners run some 4 receiver sets. I don't know how much opportunities will Ellington have to return KO's since most are unreturnable. Let's see if he can return punts. He's the fastest receiver the Niners have right now.

The 49ers are so tight lipped about everything. There was an article online (maybe Maiocco) that said the 49ers were disappointed in Patton's progress so far.

I think people made the assumption that because we were so heavily interested in adding a FA WR that we didn't have confidence in Patton as a #3.

But if you dig a little deeper what the 9ers were looking for was a WR with a different skillset than Patton. With Crabtree and Boldin in the lineup having Patton at #3 would just be redundant and you would be throwing 3 possession guys out there when what is needed is a guy with speed that can stretch the field.

So to go back to the topic Patton will be the first guy on the field if Crabtree or Boldin is injured (unless we keep Lloyd) and Ellignton is a guy they'll look to development and hopefully bring speed to the WR corps.

They'll both probably be quickly forgotten in 49er history. I like Patton's attitude though, just not sure about his talent.

Not sure this is the thread for this but oh well....here goes.

Our receivers are always going to be somewhat limited under our current offensive philosophy. We run something like 53% of the time, most in the league. That means if we complete 60% of our passes and have five receivers in the mix, including backs and TEs, that's only around 50 balls a receiver (rough math).

Denver probably threw 250+ times more than us and Peyton was probably closer to 70%. Therefore more receptions for his receivers. Now Denver is the opposite extreme but my point is we have to temper our expectations with the current regime. We aren't going to have three 75+ reception receivers on the team. We were like 80,50,20 last year for the top 3...again rough math.

Also, with young receivers more passes equals experience so pass catching development is slowed if they are run blocking.
