Is this a good move?

Just got a text via Bleacher Report that the Patriots have signed Austin Collie... In this same report... Adam Schefter has tweeted this is a done deal as well

The kid has talent and heart. But this kid should retire. He's had a lot of concussions.

Probably because Boyce hasn't been doing much.
Amendola, Collie, Edelman, Thompkins, Dobson, Slater...it sounds like a better group without Boyce to me.

I just don't see Boyce going anywhere. He was never expected to do much this year.

If Collie doesn't get concussed again, he's a good player.

The problem is he's likely to get concussed again and it's likely to have serious, longterm consequences. I'm not sure I can cheer for him, even though I have no problem with him as a person; I just don't want to watch knowing that I'm watching him sacrifice decades of fully functional life for a few football games. His body just can't take the punishment.

TO is done...

Collie is worth a flier. It's as low risk as it comes. You're getting him for the league minimum. If he gets hurt or doesn't pan out. Then he packs his bags and he's on his way out of town. Nothing hurt.

Not a bad signing, but this dude shouldn't even be trying to play in the NFL. It's his risk though and if he can still produce I'm all for the signing.

I like the dude, but sometimes people do need to be protected from themselves.
He needs to hang it up and the Pats should not have signed him due to his history.
It is his own life, but you don't give a troubled kid with a history of suicide attemps a bag of pills and a razor blade...

I would have rather seen T.O. for that reason. Signing Collie may be good for the team, or not, but it was not the "right" thing to do.

I agree with Yankee Traveler. From a pure coldblooded wins-are-everything perspective, Collie is a great signing. But wins are NOT everything, and this guy needs to be kept off the football field, no matter how much it hurts to be that close to his dream and have his body say no.

He had two concussions in 2010 and 1 in the 2012 preseason. He wasnt out of the league because of the concussions. He missed most of the 2012 season because of a ruptured patellar tendon. I dont see him being used very much but I hope everything works out for him.

Why didn't he play today? I know he has no reps but give him a shot

A very surprising pickup! This tells me that Dobson and Boyce (especially Boyce) are not giving Brady the consistent deep threat he needs to stretch the field. Also, Dobson may be hurt more than we know. Also not surprising Collie sat out the Bengals game (too bad, we could have used him). If Collie can develop the kind of rapport deep that Amendola already has with Brady on the shorter stuff, it might finally kick this stagnant offense in the butt. Collie's concussion history gives me heart palpitations though just thinking about it. He's one serious head shot away from possibly being permanently injured. Hopefully, Gronk will be back next week to pound the ball up inside (it seems like week 6 was what he was aiming at all along). Still feeling uneasy about the way Brady has looked at QB so far this season. He's been really flat for long stretches. Soon people will begin asking if he has anything left in the tank.

Great, another injury prone player. Kraft should build a hospital next to the stadium.

It's up to him to retire or keep playing. He picked keep playing, so it's not the patriots fault for signing him, it's his fault for not calling it quits.

Well shit no one else can catch the ball right now, thus far these rookies have sucked and IMO needn't be on the field, except for Thompkins, this can't hurt.

Brady was highly inaccurate last game. I do not put much blame on the WR for that. Gronk only caught 8 of 17 targets or something like that.

Now about the offensive system...if the system is so complicated that the Patriots cant find anyone that is able to really get it. Maybe its time to change the system....but alas we cant because its probably the only system Brady can thrive in.
