A good starting WR is not necessarily a deep threat. Boldin is good, but he is not a deep threat.

as i said earlier, it is really a matter of how you label it.

Not disagreeing we could use a deep threat, but If we're talking about adding a new WR, shouldn't we be THINKING Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Jordy Nelson, etc. who can run almost any route? They can run short, medium and long.

as opposed to adding a DeSean Jackson just so he can sprint 40 yards down field, 4 times a game?

a 'deep threat' is useful, but he's also a specialist. a good starting WR is just that, a good starting WR. btw - Boldin is good but a good possession WR. he's not a good overall starting WR, and for the reason you cited.

Those sideline routes have been nothing short of horrendous to watch.

The chances of getting someone like Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Jordy Nelson, etc. is probably not so great. I'm not advocating going the way of Al Davis and drafting Olympic sprinters, but I think the Niners should focus on getting at least one guy who is a deep threat. Of course, he also has to be decent in the other aspects that make an NFL WR or else he'll never make it on the field for us. However, there's always room for a role player on any team in any sport. We can't expect to just have a team full of stars like Calvin Johnson, etc.

And I still do think that Boldin is a good starting WR. How could you not? The guy produces. And I would love to have someone with the ability of DeSean Jackson, but maybe not the attitude. If we can land a Calvin Johnson, I'm all for it, but I think the team should focus on filling the deep threat role even if we can't find the next Calvin Johnson.

No doubt. Boldin is a great possession receiver. Problem is this team is stacked with them. The team needs some speed to help stretch the defense. Your right about speed. There is more to being a good WR than just speed. Over the years we have seen speedy WRs enter the league who don't amount to much.

We pass down field?

All kidding aside, our receivers are beyond good enough to get open...but our O-line has been a screen door as far as pass blocking goes. Much like the rest of our O, there hasn't been continuity up front...Kaep struggles and pushes because he's got 2 seconds to find an open man...the box is stacked so short routes are mostly cut off...and we don't adjust (don't even get me started on this one). While we have some speed (Lloyd-Johnson), it's moot because the D plays to, and succeeds to blow up the boys up front in a matter of seconds. Two rooks on the O-line at two very important positions has a lot to do with that...remember how Davis got blown up his first year mostly at 20 years old? Yea...we have two of those starting now.

as I said.....a GOOD starting WR.

meaning I go beyond "deep threat" just like you did above.

We could use any of the Packers WRs! Except today, Go 49ers!

I llke Jordy Nelson but I don't think much of Green Bay's WRs. I think they look better because of Rodgers who arguably is the best QB in the league.

Probably mentioned in the FA thread but go after Maclin or Thomas (Denver), those guys can stretch the field. Assuming they don't get the $ they want

if you want them, others want them too. Which FA doesn't think he'll get a BIG pay day?

but many say this every off-season, sign so and so big name FA.........for cheap.

I'm not opposed to paying for them, was just saying if they don't get the $ from their respective teams. Ya other teams want them but it's a fluid situation. DeSean went to Wsh and can't sniff the PO, Mike Wallace went to Miami, not coming close. Those are just a couple recent examples, so it's about a team that gives them the best chance to win. Not saying that is SF right now but talent wise, the pieces are there.

Good options this year. Maclin or Cobb. Plan C T. Smith as the deep threat.

Those are good options, but hopefully Kap will improve on his accuracy. He missed a couple of throws yesterday that were crucial.

Don't know what happened to him this year. Kaepernick has never been particularly acccurate at some of crossing routes & slants. But the past couple of years he was accurate on deep throws like the one he missed to Vernon Davis. Just think with everything that has happened he is out of sorts.
