Pantshattery and Assholery

Mmmm .... after reading through a number of different post in various threads I just realized that. although similar, these two terms have some very different aspects to them ...

Pantshattery is almost always accompanied by high levels of emotion. The poster in almost all cases very upset with the way the team is playing. But if you read through the posts you can always sense the deep level of emotional stress within the posts themselves. In many cases they also can lead to posters attacking other posters that do not agree with their respective position. Also be aware that Pantshattery is the other side of the RoseColoredGlasses coin. The poster sees what they want to see but it very much controlled by their emotions, which are usually quite visable to the readers.

Assholery is almost always devoid of emotion. The posts themselves always seem to be just 'fact and nothing more than fact'. Of course the facts that are noted serve no other purpose but to support the poster's point of view. In many cases they are incomplete, inaccurate and at times .... just made up. But, in almost all cases .... no emotion. As stated in another thread. This was and still is the posting style of HWSNBN

I think HWSNBN was CLEARLY an ass-hat. His STATED goal at Disney was to kill the board. That is why he is not welcomed here, and he never will be. Even if they do accept him over on the Niners board noidea

I do not see any of the new posters falling into that category. Some of them like to paint in broad strokes and over-react, but that is OK. That is the norm on most of the internet. Everyone acts like a caricature instead of a human being having an adult conversation. Our culture on this board is not like that, and it may take a while for noobs to notice that.

But basically, I agree with your classifications...

Asshole = Troll. Just trying to get under peoples skin. If everyone says "The sky is blue", they will say "The sky is orange".

Pantshatter = True fan. Not necessarily someone who thinks of all angles of all issues. They see a 1-10 RISP and only see bad hitting. They don't see good pitching. They see a lack of a stud 4 hitter, but do not see the existence of multiple #1 SPs. They see the lack of a big trade, but don't see the cost that would have had to be paid to make that trade.

I am OK with the Pantshatter. The asshole get's banned.

Just seeing the topic made me come here and read. And, I am glad that I did. And, though I see that different boards and groups have different terminologies, I see poster types and styles are pretty constant across all boards & sites.

P.S: You guys make me jealous. I can only wish to have and be apart of such a tight knit group, one with its own terminology and inside jokes & info.

Assholery: Assholes that just get the ban hammer. That's who they are, and their intention is to disrupt. They're easy to deal with.

Pantshattery: Over reactionaries with a sense of bias. Focusing on shit rather than big picture. That's fine, as long as they have a sense of the big picture and classed as fan rage during the moments of distress (FPOMS, Huffers, etc).

Assholery + Panshattery + Anonymity + Message forum = HWSNBN. That's just ultra-level dickwads.

Pantshattary is much more insidious than assholery. If done by a "true fan" it's annoying and Chicken Little (to which the shatter will reply he's "just being realistic"). If done by a concern troll, it's disruptive and ban worthy.

Noticing that we suck at getting the runner in from third with less than two outs is fine, extrapolating that to 2014 being doomed is pure shattery.

I hate shatters.

So how many chances does a poster get? How many " ass-holistic " posts does one get? I'm not asking for an exact number - sort of a neighborhood. I'm more thinking about fairly new members - how much rope do they get to hang themselves? Or is it OK to show up and start calling names and being a complete jerk, apparently simply for the fun of being an asshat?

If someone shows up and everyone jumps down his throat (myself included) I will give them more rope. They will (1) adjust and survive, (2) be eaten by the natives, or (3) not change and get eaten by the "bigger fish". The "bigger fish" essentially means Stokes or me. Hammer will not act on anything that happens on this board without consulting me unless it is overly aggregious.

I don't want this board to be a police state. That's why I prefer the hands-off approach. It has worked quite well for the last 3+ years.
