Brown would rather pay him and force him to play to prove a point. If Palmer stays away, and brown saves 11.5...then he'll obviously take that, too. For Brown, it's a win-win.

Either he shows Palmer that he's the man and that Palmer has to do what he says, or he saves 11.5 by palmer staying in cali.

But even if he comes back on 9/10, while his money isn't guaranteed we'd have to pay him all of it to keep him.

I suppose the question comes down to whether MB's priority is cash or principle..... He's made the stand that Palmer isn't getting out of the contract. Palmer's best move is to make MB live up to it. Let's see if MB is willing to pay money to save face. I'm guessing he's not.

If Palmer comes back on 9/9 he can get Tommy John surgery in week 3 (that he probably needs anyway) and get paid 11.5 million while MB flips the bill for his rehab. not to mention longterm mone yMB would owe him if he never comes back from the injury..

I would think 9/9 gives Palmer and his agent the most options

If he got any type of surgery, MB would likely cut him and reach an injury settlement. Palmer would be knocked out for the year, PLUS MB would get to save money. Don't see that one happening.

If he comes back on 9/9 his money is garunteed. as long as it's a football injury

I guess I'm just not convinced that is the whole story. It's not like NFL contracts are guaranteed anyways, so Brown could cut tomorrow even if he came back yesterday. So what's the difference between 9/9 and 9/10? There has to be something else to it.

Assuming this is true, normally I would be vehemently against a marquee player (yeah, I said that) taking advantage of CBA and contract loopholes to screw over the owner and franchise, but considering who the owner is, I fully endorse.

He should fake Tommy John surgery until he gets released. I'm sure he can find some doctor to put him in a cast and say he performed the surgery.

I'm still not 100% on the whole 9/9 thing. Is this because of the veteran rule that allows teams to prorate contracts after the first game is played, which is why you will see veterans cut after camp and re-signed after the first weekend of games? If so, I don't think that this would affect palmer as he's already under contract, and the Bengals have no intent of cutting him. He's going to get paid his base salary for every game he is "active" (and by that I mean not on the did not report list he is currently on).

After that, the Bengals could still cut him and reach an injury settlement for much less than the 11.5 they owe him, I believe. But again, I'm not 100% on the whole thing.

I'm not an expert on NFL contracts so this is entirely conjecture. I'm just guessing why reporting on 9/9 and garunteeing the money is so important

I think it has to do with the salar cap and whether the entire amount will count against the 2011 season. Not exactly gauranteing the contract, but the amount that counts against the cap. Once that date is past, then only the amount for games in which he is listed on the active roster will count towards the cap.

In any case, if an injury settlement is reached, then I think that number ends up being the cap number. But again, not 100% on it.

Brown isn't releasing him. He will start him and see if Palmer lives up to his word and retires. If Palmer caves like Marvin did after demanding all this stuff from Brown and plays week 1 I will have lost all respect for him. I hope he plays so Dalton doesn't get demolished his first year but I won't respect him.

what is Palmer supposed to do at this point? retire and never play football again?
Marvin had the option to leave but didn't take it. Palmer has no other option but to return

This plus he did force Brown to fire Brat, and Chad could very well be a victim of Carson's demand.

So when he comes back, are you going to root for him to play badly...at the expense of your favorite team?

After seeing Dalton play I'd actually prefer Carson. Dalton is a joke.

Well, it certainly isn't winning football games.

Honestly, the best case scenario is that Carson comes back, Mike Brown trades him, and the Bengals get compensation.

Hopefully Mike Brown is sooo fucking spiteful at losing this particular battle that he vows to 'show' Carson Palmer by doing the very thing he's worked so hard to avoid these past few decades: build a respectable football team. That means scouts, a GM, better facilities, the whole 9.

Well, we know that isn't going to happen.

I think this is a great deal for Carson and family.

He plays football for 4 months, and then gets vacation in California with his family for 8 months. He can just repeat this process every year. "Retire" in January, and then come back in September to play.
