I think he has to actually be cut before an "i told you so" thread is warranted. I bet he gets traded. the only scenario where I can see him getting cut is if they pick Geno Smith at 3. Pyror is way too raw to go in as an uncontested starter.

It's already been announced that the Raiders are interested in Smith at 3. I just don't see much of a chance he is in Oakland next year. I think he ends up in Arizona.

Those reports are always suspect this time of yr. they could be completely legitimate or a draft smokescreen.

If they pick Smith he's gone. otherwise I think he's either traded or kept on the roster another yr.

His contract gives him most of the leverage.

It's 10 million dollars in dead money to cut him. He has to agree to a new contract for a trade to make sense.

And the Raiders would save 6 mil by releasing him actually.

From the same PFT report they're citing:

"Once again, don’t rule out the possibility of a trade, coupled with a new deal that pays Palmer less than $13 million but more than the Raiders are willing to invest. Even if the Raiders get only a low-round draft pick, it’s better than nothing"

Getting cut would be his ideal scenario. But I don't think the Raiders let that happen (unless they draft Geno)

So you think if Palmer says he won't restructure they just keep him?

Even if they select Geno at #3, there is not a need to release him. It would be much better to hold Palmer than just to release him, let them compete in training camp, and start Palmer if Geno is not quite ready, and if Geno is your backup, or if Geno wins the job, trade Palmer to a desperate team that is willing to give up a 2nd and 4th rounder for him next year, who didn't get a QB this year.

I have a feeling the Jets may be willing to step up, or Arizona, Cleveland, etc.

Jets aren't paying a QB 13 mil when they are paying Sanchez over 10 mil. Oakland can't sign their players if they keep Palmer with this contract. They are HORRIBLY cap strapped.

I agree, but I think Palmer is going to sign a new contract if he's traded. So basically he has to approve the trade by giving the new team a chance to offer a contract. I don't think anyone want Palmer at his current deal, but AZ might be in for 3 yrs 25-30 million with a chunk of it guaranteed.

Arizona is sitting, waiting on him to be released. I don't see them trading for him.

And if the Raiders know there's a team that's waiting on Palmer why wouldn't they refuse to cut him?

It's all gamesmanship.

By the way, here was Florio's (whose "leauge source" "speculate" the Cards are waiting for a cut) take on Harvin a couple days ago..

Harvin could have a hard time finding a suitor | ProFootballTalk

It's all speculation.

The Raiders have no incentive to cut Palmer unless they draft Geno.

Except for the fact they are so extremely cash strapped they cant afford him at 13 mil.

So they're going to cut him, take a 10 million dollar cap hit and still not have a proven QB on the roster..

so he can start somewhere else next yr? That's not the hand they'll play imo.

They take a 7 mil cap hit and save 6 mil in cap space. That's exactly the hand they should play.

They take a 10 million dollar cap hit because all of the dead money hits the cap as soon as he's cut.

As someone who likes Palmer, I hope he gets cut tonight. that's the best case scenario for him. gets to pick a landing spot and negotiate a deal on an even playing field. i highly, highly doubt it happens though.

For the Raiders the "worst case" scenario is they pay an 6 million extra dollars for a QB who had 4,000 yds and 22 td passes in 14 games. The best case scenario they get some type of trade value for him (how much? i have no clue)

I don't think they're going anywhere with him or without him next season..... Just way too many holes on that D and too many question marks regarding the durability of the skill guys on offense. The real question is whether they think they have something with Pryor. If he's the 'new breed' of quarterback that is a threat in the spread or with his arm they have to figure it out now. I don't see how they can keep him on the bench for one more season when they aren't going anywhere next year anyway.

I don't understand why you don't try Pryor at least for a season. At worst, they suck and they get another high pick to build on, at best they find out that Pryor is their future. With Palmer they honestly get nothing by keeping him.

I agree they're better off going with a young QB. if that QB is Pryor or Geno Smith or someone else depends on different factors. The issue is that they get little cap value by cutting him. Instead of a 16 million dollar cap hit for keeping him they'll have a 10 million dollar hit. I think they keep on the roster unless a worthwhile trade offer is made.
