This I’m not a fan of. I wasn’t opposed to bringing in a new kicker even though I believe Maher showed he was over the yips, BUT, trading for a kicker who was worse than McManus last year is a horrible move.

If we were going to trade for a kicker, we should’ve gotten Dustin Hopkins yesterday.

Meh, hate trading assets for a kicker. Lutz wasn't exactly great last year coming off missing a full year with injury and according to NO writers got beat out by a rookie. I don't trust Maher and obviously the coaches didn't either, but is Lutz really an upgrade.

Understand the concern but a few things.

1. Wil Lutz is a former pro bowler. Last year wasn’t a good year for him though.
2. Brett Maher was not over the yips he continued to struggle in practice day in a day out.

Hopkins meh.

We don’t need to go rounds again but I’d much rather have a kicker who struggles in practice but makes his kicks when they game counts(and yes I know I’m saying that about the preseason games but it’s all we have this year) vs a kicker who shines in practice but isn’t reliable when the game starts.

Buts it’s all a moot point now so here’s to putting whatever Maher would've done behind us and hoping we get the Lutz from a few years ago and not last year.

He was great, one of the best kickers in the league before missing an entire year with the core injury and was not the same kicker after that injury. Hopefully he is past that.

It is likely a pick swap. The trade itself shouldn’t be a big deal. I understand the concern over his field goal percentage last year.

I do feel we upgraded with a more stable kicker despite the percentages from last year. This is more about now and not last year. Who is the more stable and better kicker now? Payton has had both if these guys he knows best and I believe he made the right move here.

I still would have liked a Cade York move but this works better then what we had.

I'm not the biggest fan of the trade, but if we are looking at Preseason to try and prove Mahar is over the yips then we have to give Lutz the same courtesy. Lutz went a perfect 4-4 this preseason. So maybe another year removed from the injury and back with a coach he loves and trusts could really see a nice upswing for him.

I think the bottom line is Payton has had both of these kickers. He had plenty of time to evaluate Maher in practice and in games. He trusts Lutz more. Lutz is the better kicker. Smart move by Payton. This is the situation you are in at kicker when you cut your kicker a month before preseason starts. Maher hasn't been trustworthy since last January in the evaluation process and is 34 years old. Lutz is a little younger and at this point a little more trustworthy. Lutz didn't miss an XP last year. Maher was better in overall FG's but that was then and this is now and Lutz appears more stable.

I trust Payton is doing the right thing until he gives me a reason not to

There is something in Payton throughout most of his time with the Saints showing he didn't like kickers. Almost every year he had a different one compared to the year before. The one and only kicker he has actually trusted is Wil Lutz. Yes he had a down year last year and that does have me nervous, but I also like that our coach doesn't seem to have any concern and knows the strengths and weaknesses of Lutz when it comes to big game situations.

The upside of McManus vs Lutz is that when they miss, "McAnus" is a better nickname than "Klutz"

Having said that, just make the ****** extra point

Saints kicker Blake Grupe - who won the competition with Will Lutz - blew a 46 yd FG that would have put the Saints up by two with a minute remaining vs The Pack ..... If the Saints had decided upon Lutz, would Payton have gone with Grupe ??

I have a feeling Lutz got his yips out in that first game and will be Will "In Lutz We Trust" from here on out

After that first game everyone who could was going on and on about how McManus wouldn’t have missed those kicks and how we made such a big mistake, well those same people were dead silent after McManus missed 2 FG’s last Sunday.
