It's probably due to the explosion of social media (Facebook, Twitter etc.) but I can't remember a year when I've been told by so-called people in the know that I'm a unpatriotic Canadian if I don't cheer for the Vancouver Canucks.

Sorry, but the NHL consists of 30 club teams and people can cheer for whomever they want to. You better believe I rally behind Canada at World Hockey Championships and the Olympics, but the same doesn't necessarily hold true when it comes to the NHL.

2006 - Oilers vs. Hurricanes, I cheered for Carolina (what self-respecting Flames fan would cheer for Edmonton)

2007 - Senators vs. Ducks, I cheered for Ottawa (pretty easy choice, I mean c'mon it's the Ducks).

Point is, if you want to get behind a certain team because they're Canadian based and you're a Canadian, hey that's cool. Just don't try to tell me I'm not doing the right thing because I decide not to join the party.

its the national media ... Gino Reda comes on radio yesterday and says "Canada needs to get behind the canucks because the cup needs to come home" (thats code for "please continue to be interested in hockey and watch TSN's Thats Hockey because you might catch me re-grow my pedo moustache")

im with botchford ... i could give 3 shits about the rest of canada cheering for the canucks ... I actually wish they werent since its our team ... get your own team

I'm with ya bro. I'd easily support a Canadian team over a U.S. team depending on which teams are in the Finals.

I cheered for Ottawa as alot of my friends are from there so I was with them
I cheered for Edmonton because that team had no business being in the playoffs and I like the underdog and Carolina just didnt seem like a team to me that deserved a cup yet
I cheered for Montreal last year as I loved loved loved that goalie display and didnt want it to end

I did NOT cheer for Calgary and instead cheered for Tampa Bay as I feared that if Calgary won the NHL would be back in the Devil Dark Ages in CLutch and Grab. They changed the rules that year. When Tampa won many teams wanted to emulate the style Tampa had and that suited me just fine.

I have calgary family and they are so fraking arrogant with their team that even 2 missed years of playoffs have not humbled them. maybe a third is in order

I'd def root for Calgary if the Bruins were out, and if they were in. Id root for Vancouver if we weren't in it. I will never root for the Habs or the Leafs. Ottawa, meh, depends on who they were facing, and Edmonton I'd root for depending on who they were facing as well. I don't hate Canada, and I def dont believe in "you must back the team from your country"...

when the other cdn teams were in the cup final I didnt outwardly cheer for them but with each win I felt good for their fans ... if they would have ended up winning I would have a given them a heartfelt "Congratulations you lucky fuckfaces"

I'd have to say my "fav" Western team is the Avs. I liked the Whalers and the Nordiques as a kid. So I can truly root for them in the postseason if the Bruins were out. I couldnt get as passionate as I would for the Bruins, but close.
