typically 3rd and 4th round picks might be yr 3 starters , 5th rounders typically are BU's . and if they start they are most likely serviceable to avg to good starters . statistics back this up . sometimes you get a mac sometimes you get a brown . i said they did little to help the offense , they drafted a 3rd round center who might be a starter in yr 2 or 3 , we threw 2 high draft picks into the secondary and we didnt look at o/line into round 4 . sadighq charles was round 4 and he hasnt been an answer for anything heading into yr 43rd and 4th round picks are the very definition of "middle round" picks, as opposed to late round picks.
The Commanders dont need their 5th round DE, 6th round RB, or 7th round DL to be any more than situational players right now, as they have starting level talent at all three positions there already.
You don't draft players in the later rounds and expect them to contribute right away, but every team in the nfl drafts late round players who they hope can contribute in more than one way, as soon as possible (for example on special teams and as a 5th cb, or a 3rd TE).
That IS the way teams do busniess in the NFL.
