I just have the sinking feeling that people voted Conservative simply because they felt it was the best chance of a majority gov't and the easiest way to avoid going to the polls for a few years.

Not exactly the best way to exercise your vote.

the marketing push by the other broad was pretty strong this year, and it worked.

It doesn't hurt that it's a pretty heavily Asian influenced neighborhood.
Wai trumps Ujjal on the demographics.

If I believed that the Conservatives could run without bringing far right ideology into the picture (which is how Harper platformed) I wouldn't mind them having a majority. I mean, my values are pretty closely aligned with the Liberal party, but I could stomach the conservatives being in power if I trusted them.

The problem is, between the Statscan "long-form" incident, the CIDA "Bev Oda" incident, and the complete disrepect Harper has for our foreign affair department (and the public service in general), I can't trust them. They've shown time and time again that they will ignore expert advice when it doesn't fit their ideology.

Statscan (world leader in stats) insists we need long-form census? Overruled. Chief statistician resigns in protest.

CIDA recommends funding for an organization? Deny it (okay) and then lie about it and pretend the lying doesn't matter (not okay).

Crime rates are at historic lows, why should we build more prisons and increase minimum sentences? Never mind, we don't trust those statistics because they don't agree with our ideology.

Jets cost how much? You don't need to know.

If that's how the "Harper" goverment acts with a minority, can you imagine the shitshow they're going to run now, with a majority government? Harper prorogued at the first sign of trouble, and then squirmed his way out of the Bev Oda scandal. They don't give a fuck about parliamentary law, and with a majority, they don't HAVE to. That's scary.

I expect the next four years to have decent economic growth (better than the disaster an NDP-led gov't would be), but Canada will take big steps backwards in terms of traditional, strong SOCIALIST (yeah, I said it) Canadian values. Harper will do whatever he wants for the next four years, brush off any criticism, and pass new laws that will make it really hard for the other parties to challenge the Conservatives in the future.

Should be fun. At least we'll get to bitch a lot.

I agree with you 100%.

im not going to fake that I am a huge political follower but what is the biggest fears from canadians that Harper has the majority? and what can Layton do about it? Its not like the NDP can call an election if they are not happy with the Conservatives direction.

Harper will do whatever he wants for the next four years, brush off any criticism, and pass new laws that will make it really hard for the other parties to challenge the Conservatives in the future.

something that really went underreported is the campaign promise that Harper made to double the annual max for the TFSA. This is where I have some turmoil. I will benefit from this promised increase.

The conservatives rolled this policy out as a measure during a phase of economic stimulus and their stated aim was to get less wealthy canadians saving money tax free without having to lock money into long term registered plans ... bring investment to the poor ... very socialist on the surface.

problem

What person living below the poverty line will be putting 10k into a tfsa? Who is this going to benefit other than those with money that vote conservative?

The current market value of existing TFSA's right now is $17.2 billion dollars. This is money that is out of the taxation system. There will be no capital gains tax to be collected from this amount that will go into general revenue and subsequently fund social programs.
