We just gave the Conservatives a majority government tonight.

Well, I guess the country felt it was high time to have high taxes, to funnel all our money into oil and the province of Alberta and have our civil liberties restriced. Did we learn nothing from the Mulrouney era?

Congrats Canada :thumb:

Ontario fucked up. Idiotic.

Can't wait to have ideology shoved down our faces at the expense of well-informed and intelligent decision-making.

Only good thing is the Bloc got whooped, and maybe the Liberals will get their fucking act together.

Very true. The only positive about the ngiht was the death of the Bloc and the seperatists. But boy did we really fuck ourselves over.

Very interesting results.

The thought of four more years of Harper makes me want to puke. The man treats Canadian citizens about as well banana republic oligarchs do. The man is a disgrace as Prime Minister. Never again will I vote for the Conservative party while he is under their employ.

That being said we'll now have a well-defined, national opposition party. Hopefully they can provide some contrast to what the Conservatives do in parliament. That, along with the banishment of the Bloq, provides some good news for Canadian politics.

I agree kenny, but the problem is I still believe he's the best of a bad lot of leaders that we currently have.

/having said that, I didn't vote for him...

You know what's worse than reading Americans complaining about the government?

neither did I ... I was very torn stepping up to vote ... I allign myself with the conservative ideology but yes he runs the show in a very undemocratic way ... Ignatieff has the charisma of a ballot box and Im always wary of the NDP after the turn they took running BC ... during a recession

locally in my riding (which is an NDP stronghold) ... and in other ridings from what i have gathered, PC candidates attended very few public debates and the common refrain/excuse was "he/she is doorknocking" thats a crock of crap. My PC candidate only did chinese language debates and the NDP candidate, a former SFU prof, hired a translator and chased this douche from one chinese language to debate to another to try and engage him

LOL. No kidding.

I used to vote for the old Progressive Conservatives from time to time. Joe Clark was a good man and a good leader.

The fact is that none of the big 3 Canadian parties are very impressive right now. If I had to pick based on leadership alone it would be Layton. I don't vote like that. Another party's candidate convinced me that they would be best for where I live and so I voted that way. For once I'd like to be convinced that ANY Liberal or Conservative candidate gave two shits about his/her local constituents 24 hours after the election. Once again I was disappointed.

If I believed that the Conservatives could run without bringing far right ideology into the picture (which is how Harper platformed) I wouldn't mind them having a majority. I mean, my values are pretty closely aligned with the Liberal party, but I could stomach the conservatives being in power if I trusted them.

The problem is, between the Statscan "long-form" incident, the CIDA "Bev Oda" incident, and the complete disrepect Harper has for our foreign affair department (and the public service in general), I can't trust them. They've shown time and time again that they will ignore expert advice when it doesn't fit their ideology.

Statscan (world leader in stats) insists we need long-form census? Overruled. Chief statistician resigns in protest.

CIDA recommends funding for an organization? Deny it (okay) and then lie about it and pretend the lying doesn't matter (not okay).

Crime rates are at historic lows, why should we build more prisons and increase minimum sentences? Never mind, we don't trust those statistics because they don't agree with our ideology.

Jets cost how much? You don't need to know.

If that's how the "Harper" goverment acts with a minority, can you imagine the shitshow they're going to run now, with a majority government? Harper prorogued at the first sign of trouble, and then squirmed his way out of the Bev Oda scandal. They don't give a fuck about parliamentary law, and with a majority, they don't HAVE to. That's scary.

I expect the next four years to have decent economic growth (better than the disaster an NDP-led gov't would be), but Canada will take big steps backwards in terms of traditional, strong SOCIALIST (yeah, I said it) Canadian values. Harper will do whatever he wants for the next four years, brush off any criticism, and pass new laws that will make it really hard for the other parties to challenge the Conservatives in the future.

Should be fun. At least we'll get to bitch a lot.
