Seems like those foreign buyers taxes didn't do much to stop it either.

When I moved out to Vancouver Island in 2008, Victoria was already pricey (that combined with the Catholic school situation made me look at the other side of the Malahat). Fast forward to 2019 and things have just gone crazy in the BC capital.

Benchmark price for home rises to $840,300 in core

/I think it's now over 900 grand by the way.

Is it the same, uh, demographic though from what you can tell? Or is it more just that the city's a gem that more people discovered?

I think people started looking at Victoria because Vancouver was just way too expensive - Also, I think a lot of people that lived in the lower mainland cashed in by selling, getting a bigger home/acreage on the island and then pocketed the remaining cash. As a result, demand for housing in/close to Victoria continues to be hot.

The headline is very misleading (shocking from the Star) but I don't think it's much of a shock that people are more in tune with their near neighbours - I feel a fuck ton more New York than I do Manitoba.

British Columbians feel more American than Canadian, survey says | The Star

yah .. "feel more Cascadian than Canadian" is the better headline but no one east of here would understand what Cascadia was/is because theyre clueless about the left coast ... which is probably why people here "feel more Cascadian than Canadian" lol
