South African friend of mine consistently says that hippos scare him more than any other animal.

This from a guy who has to carry a rifle anywhere on his family's property in case he gets attacked by lions.

Yup. Africans that I met when I was there (the ones who spent time int he bush) were mist afraid of hippos too.

watched a couple of racoons have a fight in my backyard - presumably over the territory.
It was very interesting to see, but now I'm not sure if I have to call the land titles office and let them know that a raccoon now owns my backyard.
