What snow does to Birmingham, Alabama. - Imgur

I get that the locals are ill-trained to handle driving in snow. But most of the people there drive giant 4 wheel drive trucks and if the snow was a mud bog they'd hit it at 80mph while screaming "Hey Y'all, WATCH THIS!".

How the fuck does your car catch on fire because of SNOW?

That is a pretty incredible group of pics. The one i can't get is the shot of the river/creek with like three cars in it! My God!! What in the hell are these people doing while driving? Hope none of those pics involved fatalities.

What in the hell are these people doing while driving?

Likely a mix of the following:

Temperature hovering around freezing
People driving too fast for road conditions
Summer tires (very little grip)
* Locking up brakes as soon as skidding starts

* I know what you're thinking anti-lock brakes, right, but people have been taught to pump the brakes if they're not stopping which is the exact wrong thing to do if your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes.

Pumping tires is better than pumping the brakes

So I've been told

That is probably 99% of the cause for these accidents. Just like when it rains, you can't drive quite as fast and expect your vehicle to respond as quickly as it does in the dry. Having lived in southern Cali for a few years, people there can't even grasp that concept, soo.. unfortunately these things happen. Most probably could have been prevented though by just slowing down.

Also, they are sanding the roads. That's not how you defeat ice.

Seriosuly?

A thin layer of sand makes a wet floor treacherous. I can't imagine what it does to snow covered roads.
