$27 million car

ferrari-275-nart-spider-rm.jpg

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider sells for incredible $27.5 million - Autoblog

coolest of all: this specific car has had only one owner from new; and finally, the long-standing owner of the car announced that all of the proceeds from the auction would be given to charity.

I don't know if I'd call this "neat," but I found it interesting. Apparently in Japan at the base of Mount Fuji there is a very dense forest called Aokigahara (Sea of Trees) with little wildlife and dense trees. It is dark and very quiet. And apparently more than 100 people hike into it each year and commit suicide mostly by hanging. To the point there are signs discouraging suicide and reminding people they have reasons to live along the hiking trails. Talk about your creepy national parks. This video talks more about it with one of the park rangers explaining the phenomenon. He even runs into someone "camping" there on the walk. It's weird/sad, but interesting...

Maybe some of you have heard of this/know of it already, but I had never heard anything about it.

Japan has had suicide problems for a very long time, steeped heavily in the samurai culture that a person who has done something dishonorable, which can sometimes dishonor both the person and their entire family, can restore honor to their name - and their remaining family members - by committing suicide.

It's actually a pretty central aspect of the James Bond novel You Only Live Twice (just the book, movie is completely different).

Me: *walk into meeting, place Ninja Turtles cup on table in front of me*
Stodgy business guy, of roughly my same age: "You steal that from your kids?"
Me: "What do you mean?"
Him: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?"
Me: "They're heroes on a half shell."
Him: *blank stare*
Me: "Turtle power!"

I feel bad for people who either didn't have a childhood or feel they have to forget it.

Absolutely. Although I always make sure to stay appropriate to the setting of the meeting, I have about 40 pairs of socks with various patterns and colo(u)rs. Dinosaurs, crabs, sharks, space ships, even Space Invaders. Good fun.

Fortunately for me, there were lots of other IT Geeks in this meeting. At least five people asked me where I got the cup.

HA!

I am on a quad XEON machine with 64gb of RAM with the OS running on an SSD. AND the machine has 2 1gb cards in it.

This computer displays things before I actually click on them.

I AM NOT FALLING FOR YOUR SHENANIGANS AD-BOT!

You don't need to be an IT geek to appreciate TMNT.

If you came in with a '1337' cup or something about binary, then you'd know you were truly among IT geeks.

You should have been here the day I wore my "There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't" shirt. There were a lot of confused looks in line at the cafeteria.

IT guys generally accept people like me who have been proven to be off their rockers.

That's the exact binary joke I was thinking of. Didn't know if it would fit on a coffee cup or not though.

Only ever saw the shirt: ThinkGeek :: Binary People

So, I have this habit of writing quotes on the dry erase board outside our secured lab space. Sometimes geeky, sometimes funny (It currently says "A wise man speaks because he has something to say, a fool speaks because he has to say something".)

For a while, I had "Zeroes and Ones are forever." I liked that one so much, I wrote "Forever" in hex, converted it to Binary and made the resultant string my Instant Message Client status. I understand three people gave themselves cranium cramps trying to figure it out.
