I've done exactly the same thing when I found two cubs in a dumpster in northern Ontario once.

The mother was nearby in the woods making the weirdest sounding howl/growl I've ever heard.

I uses branch that I found instead of a ladder but it did the trick. I'll tell you what, I didn't get out of the car for long.
