For some reason I had a feeling Glenn was a goner after Maggie said where the camp was and the governor hugged her looking at Glenn. I thought Glenn was going to respond and get killed. Glad that didnt happen.

I was worried about that, too. Also, the fighting off the zombie in the chair scene was pretty intense. Glenn is definitely a scrapper.

I thought the bold part was a critical moment in the character of the Governor. The show has toyed with us a little this season as to whether the Governor is an evil seed or a guy who is protecting his own as Rick might do. He seems kind and a protector at times, but scenes like the collection of jar heads make you think he must be evil. But I thought the Maggie hug last night showed him pretty clearly. He had the information he needed. I can understand using fear to get information he sees as important to his people. But then doing something so damaging to Glenn by hugging/kissing his half-dressed girlfriend was just fucked up. This gets to a larger point of the show that is starting to bother me...

Everything has become EXTREMELY conflict-oriented. Since the first season, every encounter with other humans seems to turn into a gunfight at some point and everyone is extremely aggressive. I understand that in this post-apocalyptic world there would be some of that. But with dwindling human numbers surviving, I also think that most people would be happy (hell, giddy) to come in contact with other survivors and would work together more often to help each other and maybe to rebuild society a little more.

I guess as a viewer, I keep wondering when they start to reach that point. Especially since the interpersonal relationships have been MUCH less interesting this season. They keep killing off, ruining, or marginalizing the best characters, and at some point, you lose interest in the show.

I guess I hit that point with this episode. Every episode for the last season and a half essentially boils down to this - someone is separated from the group and/or there are outsiders we are unsure of. It gets a little old and feels like I'm watching a bunch of people endlessly running around playing out the same scenario. Someone is either found, rescued, or killled, and we start the cycle all over again. The storytelling and character development gets a little lost in it.

Relating to character development, here is what we have this season:

Rick - interesting dynamic developing with his wife, but they kill her right before we find out if they are going to make it as a couple or not
Lori - slowly made us hate her, now dead (Rick less interesting for it)
Shane - quickly made us hate him, now dead (previously very compelling)
Dale - dead (previously very compelling)
Hershell - miss the leadership dynamic between him and Rick, Ricktatorship good for group, bad for TV
Glenn/Maggie - in love, kill zombies, pretty boring besides Maggie's chesticles
Darrell - started the season with crossbow, still has crossbow
Carol - barely says anything and barely alive
T-dog - barely says anything and now dead
Beth - T-dog has had more lines since he died than her
Michonne - so distrusting that Rick needs jaws of life to get her name out of her after they just saved her life! very one dimensional

Characters with actual character devlopment:
Prisoners - a little interest there, but mostly killed off quickly, the tall black guy is a little interesting, the drug user just seems to be hoping nobody kills him
Governor - compelling, love interest, larger objectives, good/evil? lots to draw interest
Andrea - having to make tough decision, adjusting to new life, sleeping her way to the top, ocassional thong shot
Milton - still has hope for scientific progress, interesting to see how he faces that failure
Zombies - more docile/peaceful with jaws gone, more character development than Carol

I'm not sure this show isn't starting a downward slide. It's not about number of zombie kills, it always comes down to characters and storytelling. If we don't have interesting relationship dynamics, and there is no bigger picture or goal (think Lost) aside from surviving day-to-day, then we're left not caring as much.

New characters in the prison with some personality will be a welcome addition. In Woodbury, Merle (not exactly new but might as well be), the Governor, and Milton are all pretty interesting.

The prison killed off a few and brought in a few. I'm not sure what might become of Oscar. He has some potential, but then again I thought that about Randall and the talkative guy in the bar. :L I'll be surprised if Axel lasts past this season.

Michonne finally had a chance to show another side of her character when she went to the prison but instead decided to be the same old Michonne for no logical reason. She obviously went to the prison with a purpose but then she seemed to forget that purpose as soon as she got there and decided she needed to be difficult just for the sake of it. It didn't matter that they had a common enemy in Merle. It didn't matter that they helped her from the zombies and offered to help her gunshot wound. It didn't matter that she had to know they were Andrea's former group (unless she was sleeping with her eyes open when Merle and Andrea were talking in her presence). It didn't matter that Maggie and Glen, the 2 people they send out for supplies, clearly were not dangerous or Merle never could have taken them. She even had a peace offering with the formula and other stuff and had valuable information for them so why wouldn't they welcome her in? I mean it's one thing to proceed with a bit of caution but if you have any trust issues, being all hostile and difficult and only giving up bits and pieces of information at a time isn't exactly going to help her cause if they are indeed people not to be trusted.

Long story short (too late), I'm loving season 3 but I'm really disappointed in Michonne's character so far. I keep hoping it leads to a pretty cool payoff. Luckily there are countless other reasons to watch the show than just her.

So is this show any good? My TV roster is a bit low and I'm thinking of filling it out with one of:

Walking Dead (AMC)
Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
Your suggestion (YOU)

I figure I should be able to make it through the first two seasons of Walking Dead on a one month free netflix account. Don't mind renting DVDs either. Suggestions?

Also currently watching:

Dexter
Game of Thrones
Breaking Bad (anyone know where to legally watch the 5th season?)
Girls (HBO), New Girl, Mindy Project - for the wife, otherwise she'll watch Jersey Shore and Bachelor / Bachelorette

I never really had much of a thing for zombie shows/movies but just happened to be at a friends place when he was watching and I really liked it and got hooked. So of course (like most others in this thread ;) ) I'm gonna tell you I think it's great. But yeah you're not exactly going to get a random sample of opinions here. Hahaha!

Did you watch LOST? And if so, did you like it? This show reminds me a bit of LOST in some ways. Yeah a mysterious island and a world full of zombies aren't exactly similar storylines, but it's all about the surviving characters and how they interact with each other in the new world they find themselves in.

Last year's mid-season finale was Sophia walking out of the barn. I can't wait to see how they try to top that!

Holy fuck! 10 out of 10 episode!

Are they seriously going to make us wait until February to find out what happens next?

It seems like they need 1 black guy as part of the prison group at any given time, no more and no less. Who would have thought that Axel would outlive the rest of the prisoners? He's likely a goner before the season ends. That was really creepy and funny with Beth and Carol.

I had a feeling Maggie would kill a human at some point this season.

I think they will force Daryl and Merle to have 1 of those gladiator style fights surrounded by the zombies, only this time for real and to the death.

AMC is showing the complete "The Walking Dead" series on New Years eve and day. If you ave an empty DVR you could skip the Netflix step.

I have no idea what will happen there. Fun episode. Nice fight scene between the Governor and Michonne. Loved the head on the floor. Carl is turning into his dad.

Yeah he is. I think Merle is a goner. There doesn't seem to be a place for him anymore. I can't see the main group welcoming him back now after what he did to Maggie and Glen. I hope I'm wrong though because I like his character. He'll have to do something super heroic.

Rick and the others are giving Michonne the Michonne treatment. I guess she brought it on herself to some extent but they sure are hostile towards her considering how much help she was to them.

I think it's absolutely hilarious that in the same episode T-Dog dies, Oscar joins the main group. Then in the same episode Oscar dies, an alpha male black dude leads a group to the prison. I'm sure it's just coincidence but you would think they would try to avoid that type of thing. :L

Character development all over the place! Just when I was doubting them. Really solid episode tonight.
