I cant use cash here. In Baltimore I get robbed 3-4 times a week. There is something called 'thieves courtesy' here where they only take your cash, not your credit or debit cards. No need to be assholes. We also have something called 'robber's rights' and that means if we get robbed then we rob someone else to make up for it.

Its actually a really good system.

I'm going way out on a limb here and gonna guess that comeds doesn't work for the Baltimore Tourist Bureau...

That would be the place to hack - Mt. Gox, not Target.

I heard a guy in Baltimore recently robbed the City out of $120.6 Million.

You're wrong. They hired him right after they fired me.

Phew, I'm safe. I went to Target on 11/23.

Also, my credit limit is pointlessly small for identity thieves to bother trying to exploit.

But they're spending less than my wife does so I just let them roll with it.

So a few of the credit card companies have decided that until the full list is known, they are just going to take any account with a transaction at Target in the time frame, and apply their fraud rules to any transaction > 150 miles outside the customer's home zip code, and deny the transaction until they can verify the customer is truly making it.

Thank goodness this is not a time of year where people shop online OR travel long distances. :L

I'm pretty sure I used my card there between that time... Guess I'll have to check my account way more frequently.

When checking your account, look for one dollar or one penny transactions. That could be a sign of testing to see if your card is still active.

There have already been arrests in Illinois where people are using cloned cards to buy gift cards.

Thanks for the heads up.

This is why you pay with cash, not credit cards

no, this is why you make sure your card has a zero liability clause for fraudulent transactions.
(and points)

Yeah, you're throwing cash away (not to mention nearly free trips to exotic locales in business and first class and swank hotel rooms) by paying with cash.

This is provided you know what you're doing and know how the game works, of course.

As with any event, the scammers are coming out of the woodwork. Emails and text messages are showing up, claiming to be from Target, about the credit card breach. Remember a few things:

1) You do not have to give an email address or phone number to buy things at Target, so they would really have no way to tie your phone or email to any purchase you made. DO NOT CLICK ANY LINK IN THESE EMAILS OR TEXTS.
2) Target has NOTHING to do with your card being re-issued, that is your bank's responsibility.
3) The list of numbers has been given to all the banks. If you want to know if your card was affected - call them. Again, Target is not posting the list anywhere to "check".

Also, banks are in a tough spot. Typically what happens during these breaches is they cancel cards and reissue new ones. Obviously no bank (except maybe Chase) is heartless enough to do that the weekend before Christmas. So what they are doing is turning up fraud detection by looking for anomalies in spending habits trying to ID transactions that aren't yours. If you plan to travel more than 100 miles outside your home zip code, you might want to call the number on the back of your card and tell them that. That's a "low hanging fruit" identifier.

Also, gets some cash to take along so you're not stranded in a gas station in the middle of nowhere.

Seems like the bad guys did NOT get PIN numbers, so it seems banks will be less likely to suspect a transaction is fraudulent if you use your PIN.
