Like I said in the playoffs you need a goalie who can stand on their head and we don't have one. A great goalie can overcome mistakes made by the other players on the ice. That is the last piece of the puzzle needed for this team.

We had one for a grand total of 1 game... Game 6 in St. Louis. Kari stood on his head and absolutely stole that game. Best game I've ever seen him play and just goes to show that he can in fact be an elite goalie when he wants to be. But that's the catch with him- he's as mentally fragile as it gets. He'll post a shutout and then follow it up by allowing 6 of the softest goals you've ever seen. He just isn't reliable at all.

It's funny because I've met the whole team at multiple Casino Nights and and other fan events, and the two guys who let them down the most, Goligoski and Lehtonen, are the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. I hate that they stink up the joint so often and I have to curse their names so often because they were so ridiculously nice to me each and every time I met them. Goligoski even remembered the conversation we had at the Casino Night the year before about the Canucks. But I hope they're playing elsewhere next season.

Two other super talkative and nice dudes who I'm glad will be back- Spezza and Sharp.

Oh, and Antti Niemi is a weird and aloof douche. They can fire him into the sun.

Also, Jason Demers is the Elvis Andrus of the Dallas Stars... immature to the point of it being annoying. He acts like a 16 yr old high school kid and comes off as very cocky. Based on his play during the playoffs, he's another guy I won't miss should they choose to let him walk in free agency.

I'd let Goligoski, Demers, Jordie Benn, Vern Fiddler, and Travis Moen walk. I'd definitely re-sign Colton Sceviour and try to bring back Eaves and Kris Russell if possible.

Next I'd try to package Eakin, Niemi, and Oleksiak in a trade for whatever small return we could get.

Then I'd kick the tires on signing (or trading for) Reimer, Fleury, Bishop, Gibson, or Vasilevskiy. Then use Kari as the world's most expensive backup until his contract expires in 2018.

Something like this would work:

Benn-Seguin-Sharp
Nichushkin-Spezza- Eaves
Roussel-Faksa-Hemsky
Sceviour-Dickinson-Ritchie

Russell-Klingberg
Oduya-Johns
Nemeth-Lindell

Reimer/Fleury/Bishop/etc.
Lehtonen

The D there is still a little suspect, especially that top pairing, so an upgrade there would always help. The core of Honka, Lindell, Klingberg, and Johns is going to be really, really good. We just need Nill to find a solid piece of two to add to them (true top pairing guy, as long as we're dreaming).

Lightning are very underrated. They have the speed to keep up with Pittsburgh and the better goalie and defense.

I think the winner of the Blues-Sharks wins it all though.

Stars trade Alex Goligoski's negotiating rights to Coyotes for draft pick
Goligoski is due to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1

The Arizona Coyotes have acquired the negotiating rights for defenseman Alex Goligoski from the Dallas Stars in exchange for the 128th pick (fifth round) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Goligoski, who turns 31 at the end of the month is due to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. All this trade does is get the Coyotes in front of him ahead of free agency's early negotiating period. Goligoski could still choose to explore unrestricted free agency. If that's the case, it only cost Arizona a fifth-round pick for the extra meeting time. They still have seven choices during the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

As far as Goligoski is concerned, there should be a pretty good market for the veteran blueliner as a number of teams have a pressing need for a left-shot defenseman in their top four.. That's probably why Arizona thought it prudent to dip into their draft pick surplus to try to beat everyone to the punch.

The Coyotes are taking a calculated risk here. Goligoski has to know he's one of the better options in a shallow market for defensemen. That said, Arizona gets added time to make their case, discuss money and even if he doesn't sign before July 1, the Coyotes still could be among the teams he considers while listening to other offers. The perfect scenario for Arizona, of course, is if they can just get him locked down before any of that happens.

The Coyotes definitely have needs on the blue line. Oliver Ekman-Larsson is the centerpiece and under team control for three more years. Meanwhile, Zbynek Michalek is the only other defenseman under contract for next season. Adding a piece like Goligoski now would also help the Coyotes plan and budget for the number of restricted free agents they have to re-sign, like defensemen Connor Murphy, Michael Stone and Klas Dahlbeck. Forward Tobias Rieder is also a restricted free agent they should be looking to re-sign.

One other thing to note, is that this is the kind of move that suggests the Coyotes are looking more serious about coming out of the rebuild process and getting back to contending for a playoff spot. While they have a stable of young players and prospects that are going to be battling for bigger roles, having key veterans is important for any team. Goligoski helps fill that need, too.

Over 562 games in his NHL career, Goligoski has 277 points. He had 37 in 82 games last season as he helped the Stars win the Central Division. The Minnesota native averaged nearly 24 minutes a game last season and has usually been a positive possession player throughout his career as a strong puck-mover.

Meanwhile, this effectively ends Goligoski's tenure in Dallas after spending six seasons with the Stars. They probably weren't going to have the cap space available to bring him back anyway, but now get at least something for a player they were sure to lose.

Get ready for the annual summertime Jim Nill trade r*pe season. He and his magical mustache are just waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting GM and completely ravage him. 3 summers ago he bent over Peter Chiarelli and took Tyler Seguin from him for Loui Eriksson and Reilly Smith. 2 summers ago, he assaulted Bryan Murray, forcing him into giving up Jason Spezza for Alex Chiasson. And then last summer he had his way with Stan Bowman, stealing Patrick Sharp and Johnny Oduya for Trevor Daley and Ryan Garbutt.

Now the mustache is on the prowl again, looking for his latest victim. Who will it be? He needs a goalie and a legit defenseman (or both). He will get what he wants and not even feel bad about it afterward. He's Jim Fucking Nill.

Stars signed veteran defenseman Dan Hamhuis. Solid pickup! He was on Team Canada in the last Olympics. He's kind of like Oduya in that you rarely notice him, but in a good way (meaning that he quietly goes about his business of not making mistakes and making the simple plays). The Stars wanted him at the trade deadline but Vancouver's owner childishly refused to trade with Gaglardi because of bad blood there. So the Stars waited 5 months and got him for free. Vancouver could have acquired a usable asset for him, but immaturity landed them nothing instead.

Thats a good pick-up as we likely need to add some solid defensemen and a goalie, though not sure where Nil finds the latter

Heika: Ben Bishop-Stars trade carries a lot of risk for both teams; it'd be like a high-stakes game of poker

Mike Heika recently held a chat to talk all things Dallas Stars. Here are some highlights:

Question: I saw a lot of Ben Bishop buzz on Twitter during the NHL draft. Do you think a deal gets done anytime soon? And do you think it'd be worth it to get Bishop and then run the risk of him leaving after one season?

Heika: It's a tricky situation for both teams. If you're Tampa, why would you give up Bishop so quickly? They have a legitimate chance to win the Cup next year. Why not hold him to the end, just like the Stars did with Goligoski, and possibly trade his rights after that?

If you're Dallas, do you give up a lot if he's not signed to an extension? If he wants a five-year deal at more that $5 million, do you commit to that and give up some great prospects?

There is a lot of risk on both sides, so any trade would be a high-stakes game of poker.

That said, of the goalies who seem available, he's the one I think would help the Stars the most.

Stars F Jamie Benn's World Cup status in question after undergoing surgery
Benn's recovery timeline has been set at six weeks

jamiebennsurgery.jpg
Jamie Benn is expected to need six weeks to recover from offseason surgery. USATSI
Dallas Stars captain and leading scorer Jamie Benn is expected to be a big part of Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey this fall, but it is suddenly unclear if he will be able to participate. The former Art Ross Trophy winner underwent surgery Thursday to repair a core muscle injury.

It is unclear how or when Benn sustained the injury, but surgery was a success according to the team. The recovery timeline, according to the Stars, is going to be six weeks and is not expected to interfere at all with the start of the 2016-17 season. That timeline would also, theoretically, get Benn back in time to compete for Canada in the World Cup, but it's cutting it a little close. Per the team release, Benn's availability for the World Cup, which begins on Sept. 17 in Toronto, will be determined after those six weeks have passed.

Benn had a career year in 2015-16 with 41 goals and 89 points. He also had 15 points in 13 postseason games as he led the Stars into the second round of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Over the last three seasons, his game has gone to another level as he has become one of the elite power wingers in the NHL today.

He is also heading into the final season of his current contract, after which he should receive a substantial raise from the $5.75 million he will make this season. The Stars can sign him to an extension at any time now.

Benn's health is crucial to both the Stars' 2016-17 season and his future earning potential. At 26 years old, he should be expecting a max deal. How that all factors into the World Cup decision will be interesting to see. It's probably better to be safe than sorry for both sides, but if Benn is 100 percent after rehabbing the injury, there's probably not much reason to keep him home.

The left winger was part of Canada's Olympic gold medal team and he's a better player today than he was then. Having him in the mix would certainly bolster Canada's title chances at the World Cup, even though they're already favorites. Additionally, Benn would be joined by line mate Tyler Seguin on Team Canada this time around, with a chance to get good and warmed up for what should be another dominant offensive season for one of the league's most dynamic duos.

In the meantime, Canada should be looking at potential replacements for Benn in the event he can't go. If they're looking specifically for another left winger, recent New Jersey Devils acquisition Taylor Hall would make a lot of sense. If they seek a forward of any kind, Corey Perry, Ryan O'Relly, Wayne Simmonds and Benn's Dallas teammate Jason Spezza are among the top scorers from last season that did not make the initial roster, but there are a lot of other potential options.

Surely Team Canada would prefer the guy that has more points than anybody over the last two seasons, but there will be no shortage of star players available to them should they need to replace Benn.

I had a sneaking suspicion once this story broke that they had agreed to an extension with him. Long-term agreements like Benn's are often followed up by the team having the player get whatever has been ailing him fixed up so that he's good to go for the long haul.

8 years at $9.5 Million is a good deal for both sides. Benn probably could have landed $10M on the open market, but he wanted to stay in Dallas. However, he's still getting paid just more than Crosby and Stamkos, the same as Malkin, and just less than Kopitar, Toews, and Kane. I'd say being right in the middle of that group somewhere is very fair to both the team and player.

Hey Will, I'm pretty sure it was you but wondering if you were the one on the thread that gave us a recommendation on a printer/embroider place that do a great job in putting names on the back of hockey jerseys. If so if you could post it again I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
