Football injuries are usually chronic and just don't go away.

Yea hockey players are tough, but the sport doesn't demand what some positions in football do. Lineman and running backs have it bad. I would argue Danny Briere is tougher than any QB in the NFL though

If the NFL gets its way and 2 more games, I'm gonna be ticked. These guys are constantly battling nagging injuries, and to have to play 2 more meaningful games is nuts. There won't be any players left for the playoffs. In reading and researching some articles, the NFL has no legs to stand on and their being ridiculous about what they want. I agree that players are paid far too much, but it's not like the NFL isn't making tons of money.

IMO football players are underpaid. Hockey players may get less money, but their percentage of team revenues per person is much larger than that of football players.

I was a lineman, offensive and defensive, in high school. Let me tell you something: it hurts. I was a 200 lb right tackle and left defensive end. Those 3 yards between you and the guy across from you? Bigger distance than you think. That first step is hard, and with just three steps out of a three-point, you get yourself up to speed pretty quickly. Especially if you're undersized like I was. If you don't you're screwed.

I broke my wrist, dislocated fingers, sprained ankles, and got my bell rung so that for the next couple plays, it was all I could do to get to the line without falling over. And my knees and back, after just three years of the high school game, are not in very good shape. And I missed half of my games because of injuries, most of those misses from the surgery I had on my wrist (which, by the way, four years later, still hurts constantly. Sometimes, I can't even use my right and for pain or stiffness.)

Hockey didn't do that to me. I couldn't skate, so all I did was stand in front of the net and take cross-checks to the lower back and the back of my neck. And I decided to take a couple runs and a guy a half a foot taller than me twice in one shift and he rung my bell both times. (I almost got into my opponents' bench. I only took one more [unsuccessful] run at him in the game. He cross-checked me in the neck the previous game, so I was looking for revenge.) None of that hurt like football. Rugby doesn't even hurt like football. And I've played with a knee injury, a sprained neck, and bronchitis. It still doesn't hurt like football.

I can't imagine playing a ten-game season. Cripes!

If you are shit skater, no one is going to crush you full out.
Beer leagues or intramurals are generally no contact or light contact.

not really apples-to-apples, as I reckon your football was at a pretty competitive level.

I played league, college vs. college, full contact. Half my team got kicked out of every other game for fighting or dirty hits. Our games got kind of ridiculous. Everyone was fair game, including me. And I'm not good enough to avoid it, so I stand in and try to hit back.

Aside from the hitting differences, there are some forgiving aspects to ice in terms of your joints that I like. The fact that is offers less friction prevents a lot of injuries that you see in football all the time. Guys in football get hit with their leg planted, and the leg gives/breaks/twists because you are dug into the ground. On ice, your leg or your body slides away. I'm sure D'stone could explain the scientific principles behinds this, but by and large, it's not a coincidence that most star athletes in hockey have long careers, but in football, it's much more of a crap shoot.

We have a girl on our team, and guys take runs at her. We also have a kid who might be 5' tall, and guys take runs at him. In short, no player is safe in our league.

Hockey is the only sport I've played in which I haven't sprained my ankle...

And yes, that includes baseball.

I think I should also qualify what I mean by "I can't skate." I actually can skate, and have decent speed. I can stop on a dime on my right foot, but take about 5 feet on the left foot. I can turn pretty sharply in either direction, too. I'm just not good skating laterally or backwards. Until I try to do one of those things, I look like a fairly competent skater. It's not like I'm falling all over myself.

I'm also a big dude, so the enforcers target me early, hoping they can get me to do something stupid. I usually don't.

I like oranges, and I say that people who eat apples are pussies!
Fuck that...orange eaters are the pussies, especially the ones who have to take the skin off before eating it. Do you take the crust off your bread, too?
