Extra time is 30 minutes broken into two 15 minute segments.

Despite the outcome, I think this tourney was a big win for soccer in the US

I thought it was based on the amount of stoppages, out of bounds, penalty calls, etc. If it's a set amount of time then why not just make each half 60 minutes firm and be done with the extra time concept?

The extra time he was referring to is basically the equivalent of Overtime. The game was tied at the end of regulation, so they played two sessions of OT - with additional minutes added because of stoppages, etc.

That was a fantastic game - I feel bad for the US, but Japan showed tremendous resiliency.

If the U.S. was going to lose, and I wished they didn't, I'm glad it was Japan that won. They've been through a lot lately.

Agreed, but still, that was such a let down. They didnt show up. I could play better defense with my eyes closed.

Ok, I get it now...OT is not sudden death, and the extra minutes were added to that for stoppages. Still, I wish they would just stop the clock during stoppages and get rid of the extra minutes garbage.
