After getting word on the new CBA that teams will be given 120.4 million dollar salary cap Ike Taylor is likely destined for a new team. Even though the Steelers and Art Rooney have said that Taylor is a priority (over and over again) I can not find the money even with restructured contracts and cuts. It does not have as much to do with 2011 as it does with 2012. The cap will not go up any higher than 120.4 million until after the 2013 season. Meaning that a big signing by Taylor would put a damper on many of the Steelers future plans.

Coming up for contracts in 2012 are 3 of the Steelers young stars and also the best player on the team. LaMarr Woodley should get a new deal this year but has the franchise tag and will at least be around until next season. Middle Linebacker Lawrence Timmons also will be finishing his rookie contract and will be looking for a big deal. He is this teams future leader once James Farrior departs to retirement. Also if Farrior retires and Timmons leaves we have no one left to man the middle of the defense. These two guys are the future of this team on defense. The only other starter under 30 is Ziggy Hood. These two guys must be retained.

Also on defense Troy Polamalu is up next season. He is one of the top players in the game and will be looking at probably his last big deal. He will command big dollars. We have seen what the Steelers look like when he is not on the field and with the team starting to get younger he is one of those pieces that we can not lose. Not in any situation. Troy could be the guy that gets next seasons franchise tag. There has been word that he only wants to play a few more seasons. If that is the case he may be good with the tag until he retires.

Then on offense our new number one receiver and splash play guy Mike Wallace is also up for a deal. Wallace has come into his own and is now the biggest worry for other teams when dealing with the Steelers offense. Wallace may be unknown by some around but those in NFL circles know who he is and what he can do. Wallace is a big play receiver and has worked hard on his route running and has become a more complete receiver the last 2 seasons. Another big year and Wallace will also be in the market for a big deal. He will only be heading into his 4th year though so he may end up as a Restricted Free Agent which would give the Steelers another year to get him signed.

With those four needing new deals. A big number contract by Taylor could cost the Steelers 1 if not more of these guys. That is something they can not afford to do. Money that could be spent on the Steelers youth should not be wasted on an aging corner no matter how good he is. Even if he is the best corner we have it would be mortgaging the future to keep him for a year or two. I wish Ike could stay. Unlike most I understand what we have and know what we will be missing once he is gone but I can’t say I would let Wallace, Timmons, Woodley and especially not Polamalu test the market to keep him.

Update: Without a window for teams to sign their own players Taylor’s chances just dropped again considerably to resign with the Steelers. They do not get him to themselves for 3 days in advance

true but they will find a way around that .. when is hine's contract up?...it could cost more to get rid of him than to keep him... Im tired of mr stone hands .. how many chances they going to give that guy.. 3 years and he still drops the ball every chance he gets

He is signed until the end of 2013

Okay, I know a ton of you are passionate about the sport, and I am going to try and follow the sport more closely this coming season even though my team sucks massive donkey dick.

Pretty much created this thread because I am sure there are going to be transactions left and right with the lockout not happening. Free agancy should be pretty wild this coming week, so post anything and everything you hear here...

Didn't know you were a 49ers fan Jeff. :p

I'm looking forward to this season. The NFC West sucks so even if the Seahawks go with Jesus at QB they've got just as good a shot as any other team. With a revamped O-line (albeit 2 of the guys are rookies) and an improved D corps (assuming the Seahawks are able to re-sign Mebane and add a couple more pieces as have been rumored) the Seahawks should be able to improve their team from last season. And you can never discount the effect of Qwest (er centurylink). The stadium alone is good for a few wins per season.
