OT: NBA lockout looming

Interesting line from a Michael Wibon article about the NBA lockout...

The NBA is going to miss games, and the smart money is on the league missing lots of games. A new group of owners who paid a ton of money for their franchises since the last work stoppage 13 years ago are ready to sacrifice the season. The six owners who have both NHL and NBA teams saw first-hand how sacrificing essentially an entire season led to an overhauled NHL with slashed costs, and they're drooling over the prospect of an NBA with similar cost certainty.

That's sort of the point though. I agree they overcame challenges, but the point is to remember and learn from those humble beginnings - not forget them and become a jackass.

It's easy to say - "you have money, now go live a normal life." You may still have bad influences, you maybe were never shown how to handle money, or maybe you never had a father-figure in your life. Getting a $20 million contract doesn't instantly fix all those problems and sometimes makes them harder when the normative behaviors and social rules of your world are suddenly flipped upside down. That's my point. The differences in the people that play these sports, which I think are often exaggerated (hockey players also get DUIs, trash Olympic villages, etc.) to begin with, are more a function of the worlds they often come from than some character inherent to a person that decides to pursue a particular sport.

Thanks for the props, Evolver. It's fine if nobody agrees with me, I just think it's something to keep in mind.

a lot are saying there will be no NBA season next year. That owners are in talks with NHL owners and the NHL owners said after their lockout they got the best deal ever and infact wish they would have asked for me. Once the players start missing their paychecks they are willing to settle for anything.
