I just hope the NHL can avoid a similar scenario in a year or so...

This provides the NHL a big chance for a jump up in ratings and they need to take advantage of that.

They can have Dirk sing the National Anthem, if he can remember how it goes that is.

This Dirk?

big chance for NHL here. I don't think the NHL will go into a lockout in a few years because I think they will see a huge jump in ratings and new fans this upcoming season if the NBA is out. Also, didn't NHL learn their lesson from the last lockout? It basically killed them.

One would hope! And yes, it almost did. Though it might have been better in the long run than runners going wild with player salaries and bankrupting their team.

You never know though - as much as any of these work stoppages in any sport seem insane with the way most teams print money, it never seems to be an issue for millionaires and billionaires to argue over money. It's sad all around.

one of the main reasons I am even interested in following hockey is that it seems the players are actually out there for respect of the sport and the passion they have for it. It is one of the few pro sports, maybe the only one, that it doesn't seem like it's all about the money.

I personally don't think that varies much from sport to sport. You have good guys and greedy fucks in all jobs. Many on here would disagree with me, but I think there might be differences b/c the income level/class that you're typical NHLer comes from is middle/upper class, b/c hockey is an expensive sport. Whereas many NBA players come from poorer/lower/working class families.

There is obviously overlap and I'm sure there are poor bastards who play hockey and rich kids who play basketball, but you can make the opposite generalization. If anything, I root more for the guys who come from that background to overcome the trappings of their world. Some people on here seem to revel in basketball as a stupid game and the struggles/character of those players as flawed and terrible, whereas I try to view it as them having more challenges and struggles than many of the privileged/stable families that some of the NHL stock comes from.

I think when you are talking about two different worlds, it's tough to understand the relationship to money is very different with those who have never had to worry about it and those who have spent most of their lives worrying about it on a daily basis. I think people snap to judgment about "greed" without thinking about that sometimes.

That's sort of the point though. I agree they overcame challenges, but the point is to remember and learn from those humble beginnings - not forget them and become a jackass.

It's funny as a kid basketball was my favorite sport to play. I think March Madness is great. However it wouldn't bother me one bit if the NBA never played another season.

Agreed...its no longer a true team sport so I just dont care anymore

If the NHL ends up having another lockout then they're done. All of their gains made over the last few years will have been for nothing.

You made some excellent points there. I sometimes forget to think about where the majority of NBA players come from. But, this rags to riches story is one reason why it makes all sports interesting to follow.
