People who knowingly lie to a host and say they have six people in their party and then try to pull over tables and chairs on their own when their ten other friends showed up. We have a system, dudes. You don't get to do that. And you don't get to get mad when we tell you that they 16 of you can't sit there anymore.

What kind of fucking pet store you working at?

How do you feel about the ambiguous "8-12" party?

Also, how do you feel about the group who rotate seats, but have people standing because more showed up than expected? I find those groups (of which I am frequently a part) quite humorous.

Graduate students are flaky, is what I'm getting at here.

Oh man, DS, I hate to tell you that I usually don't find it humorous. I can handle it, because I'm a G-D pro, but on really busy nights, it's a nightmare.

Fortunately, when we do it, we're only ordering drinks, and usually sitting in the bar anyway.

We can't afford food.

At restaurants? Not often.

Besides, the food I cook is usually better than what I can order at the places I can afford. And it costs less. And I like cooking. So basically, I have almost no incentive for eating at restaurants.

For what it's worth I've been to grad school (twice actually), and that kind of shit drove me nuts. I had lab mates who would pull the cheapest stunts. Embarrassing.

My second go around I was funded really well and spent more than a few bucks making things right with servers who got shortchanged by my "colleagues".

It's probably telling that the folks who work at the places we frequent like when we go. Even when they're not assigned to our table, some will come over and chat a bit.

20% minimum, upwards of 40% if they're really good.

I factor that into my decision on whether or not I can go out.

You're a good man, DS :)

I didn't mean to sound hard on you. And you know what? Bars and restaurants have their own methods and stuff so what doesn't work in my place might not be an issue at all where you hang out. You know?

Yeah, I don't think it would work for us to stand at the tables everywhere we go, but the place we go most often seems almost to be designed to accommodate it.

If we go to a sit-down restaurant, you know, to actually eat, it's a pretty big to-do, so there is a lot of planning involved, called ahead reservations if the place takes them, and repeated head-counts. If we feel like we can go someplace nice to eat on our salaries (budget cuts are killing our department right now), we're excited and want it to go smoothly.

If I can't afford to tip 20%, I don't go. Not gonna let a potentially good server suffer because I'm broke...they still have to do the same amount of work. Although, once in college I left a $10 starbucks card instead because I was cash strapped. But, it was IHOP...and he was legitimately pumped.

I'd rather have the bottomless IHOP coffee pot than a cup of Starbucks.

Just saying.

I also tip at least 20%, typically 30-35% but I will refuse to reward inadequate service by tipping that amount.

What I don't get is when you walk into a place like a deli that has no tables to sit down. You stand in line, you place your order, you walk over to the pop machine and fill your own drink, wait for your food and then leave. But the credit card receipt they give you to sign has a tip line on it.

Why? Is anyone actually tipping the guy at the register whose only service to you is punching numbers into a machine? Really?

while I have never not tipped, the last place we ate at was a steakhouse in kelowna and I gave a 10% tip cause the food was shite ... I shoulda known better since Urban Spoon gave it a 68% satisfaction rating ... server didnt help matters by seeming to hustle us out as fast as she could (and the place wasnt busy)

I could see the contempt in her face as she spotted the 10% tip while ripping the receipt out of the visa pdt ... i guess it didnt help that, while she did this, she asked us if we had any other plans for the night and i told her we were going to the casino :noidea:

/anyone tip when they go and pick up takeout? I always do if I intend on going back there again lol
