Besides the sensationalism of modern news is the fact that the cable national news and internet give us a lot more information. If a little blonde girl goes missing (and lets be honest, its the little blonde girls who get the attention) 3000 miles away we hear about it a lot. 25 years ago when most of our news came from local sources we didnt hear about as many crimes so it seems like things are much more dangerous today. At least thats one theory and it made sense to me.

Yeah, and 250 years ago we had very limited awareness of what was happening outside of our immediate town/area. These days, even the weather is sensationalized.

Such a sad story and needless tragedy - I just hope we don't see a similar occurrence at the upcoming London Olympics, the whole world will be watching and that's exactly what these crazed individuals are counting on.

Some people are mentally ill. Others are just sociopaths. And we live in a country where it is very easy to purchase firearms... and apparently tear gas based on a quick internet search.

He was a med student? Wow. I suppose they can be mentally ill just like the next guy, but that's a little shocking.

I thought the same thing when I heard they apprehended him.

Apparently he was dropping out of medical school according to the family. Police say he had tons of ammo in his apartment and it was apparently booby-trapped. They have cleared the area near his apartment for fear of an explosive device inside.
