to be fair (reported), at the last world cup they were a good team but they were led by a coach whose philosophy was "pay me more and I'll coach"

That's true, but I still didn't see the team play (i.e. good passing and positioning) at the last World Cup that I witnessed in today's game. Increased fitness levels plays a huge part as well.
