The guys do it because it works. Just my opinion, but I think the speed at which things happen in the game can be too fast for the refs to really see what's happening. But I think it's also just the culture of the refs between the two sides. How often do you see someone get called out on diving or time wasting in men's soccer? Hardly ever from what I've seen. Anectdotally, I've seen it called and cards given more in the women's game.

and you know what ... it will eventually creep into the culture of womens soccer ... womens soccer hasnt been around as long ... the views of women competing in many "male" sports are still light years behind what people think in North America

/btw: anyone whos watched soccer will tell you Brazil womens team can dive with the best mens diving teams around (pork and cheese)

meh ... might be more enjoyable to you and some others but still doesnt take away the fact its an inferior product ... run, passing stats show that ... I watch it ... definately not more enjoyable imo though

/you want sexist views on womens soccer ... look up Joey barton lol

I don't doubt that men execute passing, shooting, etc. more consistently (and wasn't really being serious about sexism). But the style is more attacking and more exciting in my view - it's more familiar with the American soccer style I grew up with, played, and enjoy than the European soccer style which often puts me to sleep.

Woooo. 2-0 USA! Heading to the semis...

Agreed all around. Brazil's team dives better than the Chinese Olympians, but they also get called for it a lot.

Good post, Apache, and probably true, Jstew.

The American team is definitely better about diving than most of the women's teams. Maybe partly b/c they don't need to.

Hey eloco, do you ever watch non-international men's soccer? I've found that I enjoy the style of play in things like the EPL better than big international tournaments because of the attacking that they do. The World Cup is still the best tournament, but I agree that it can be a bit dull at times because of the unwillingness of most teams to go on a full attack for risk of allowing a goal. In the national leagues they play a bit more relaxed and "go for it" a bit more, it seems.

Canada advances in women's bball with a 79-73 win over Brasil - I thought I was watching the men's soccer team with all the diving from the Brasil team.

because their defensive strategy is lacking (and defensive strategy is a part of soccer that doesnt bore me) ... i made the comparison in another thread to junior hockey ... mistakes can make some sports exciting (doesnt do it for me)

Canada plays team GB today ... i think things would have been alot easier for them if they played Brazil ... because Brazils WNT is both the A)prototypical Brazilian mens team and B) the prototypical womens soccer team

super creative and strong forward push like the mens teams
but
lacking in organization and structure in their own end and along their back 4

holes galore to take advantage of (no innuendo intended - lol)

That's pretty spot on. In International, 1 and done tournaments, teams are terrified of losing and making a mistake so it can be very dull. Whereas in the EPL teams can risk more because it is a long season and a mistake here or there won't kill them.

watch the concacaf qualifying for world cup 2014 in the next couple months

/but then you see guys like Landycakes who have been more immersed in euro soccer by playing extended periods in the EPL come back and fall all over the place in the MLS

Yeah, I'll flip to the channel that shows English soccer from time-to-time. I don't follow it closely. But I usually watch for about 15-30 minutes and get bored and go watch something else. I think you are right, actually, if you watch the lower tiers below the Premiership the play is typically even more open.

I was a striker/midfielder when I played, so I just have more appreciation for more open play and more scoring opportunities than I do for watching great defense.

Jstew, out of curiosity, did you play hockey or soccer growing up? Were you a defender?

Lol. I did!! I was very good as a center mid (what I mostly played) about getting back on D. I just wasn't very good at dispossessing players of the ball. Which I always thought was weird b/c I was a strong dribbler, but I couldn't apply that the other way. I'd buy fakes too easily.

Feds wins 19-17 in the final set and moves onto the finals to face either Murray or Joker...

Tennis shouldn't be in the Olympics. They already have their own thing. Just like men's soccer shouldn't be, and probably basketball as well. Or at the very least go with amateurs.

They do limit men's soccer to 23 and under I believe - I don't have a problem with seeing the best compete at the Olympics. Men's hockey is a must see in the Winter Olympics now that NHL players can participate (of course Bettman is trying to ruin that).

high probability that basketball becomes a u-23 tournament (like soccer) in 2016

ioc and iihf dont want that for hockey though ... too much of a winter games cash co ... err ... i mean marquee event
