During the LSU Stony Brook game the other night, this occurred. Runner on first, full count, one out. Runner takes off for 2nd, pitch is ball four, but catcher follows through on the play and throws to 2nd. Umpire follows through too. Runner slides in safely but over slides bag and is called out. Call stands. Ruled as pick off, not caught stealing. Makes sense if you think about it......no different than if a guy walks, and runner on first trots to 2nd, if the ball is with the 2nd baseman, and the guy steps on 2nd but keeps walking off base and is tagged he'd be out. You just see this call so seldom.

Yep, that would be the right call......the base runner would of been fine if he never touched the bag, but once he did and slid past, he's out.....

That's actually quite funny. It makes sense but I never would have thought about it. I doubt it happens very often.

Jim Joyce would have called the base runner safe...

To be clear, he was only called out when he was tagged after touching and then leaving the base? That makes sense. A walk is only a free pass to the base, not a take a 20 foot lead on the next base pass.

Too soon, man, too soon.

Makes sense as you are certainly allowed to continue on to third if you wish to as the runner. I've seen a girl steal 3rd on a walk before in softball. Gotta pay attention, haha.

Makes sense but it seems like the base runner wasn't paying attention. If you don't hear wood or metal take a glance home before running like hell to second. I know it's easier said than done but...

Interesting keny. I have never seen that before.

Even though it worked out, you have to wonder what the catcher was thinking too. It's far more likely that he could have thrown it away and the runner would move to 3rd than to have it play out the way it did.

This is true, if there is any break down in communication and they are not expecting the catcher to whip it down there both runners could advance.

sidenote: baseball has too many stats and rules. its hard for an infant fan to grasp!

I would head for south Detroit (when you see "Welcome to Windsor", you've arrived at your destination).

I don't think the catcher had time to think. Ball 4 was very close to a strike, so the whole key to the play even happening was the catcher and really the 2nd base ump didn't know what the pitch call would be, so catcher took no chances and fired to second. Ump took no chances and called the play. Very rare. Think I'll look on YouTube for it.
