Just got back from seeing this. I don't think the entire movie was a dream. At the end, the top stumbles...in limbo and other places it never did that. I think the fact that Leo didn't go see it fall is because, after the initial moment of panic, he realized that he was in fact in reality without needing to see the top fall. He had finally gotten to the point where the dreams weren't fucking with everything he believed.

For the record, I loved the movie. My friends and I were very happy with a lot of the things they DID NOT do...there were so many ways they could have made this corny and they avoided all of them.

Oh and another reason why it's not a dream:

Leo says several times throughout the film that a good way to know that you are dreaming is if you can't remember how you got to where you are. However, this particular sequence for Leo begins with the rest of the flight and then meeting Michael Caine at the airport. So he does remember the mundane things he did to arrive at his location, whereas in a dream, we could expect him to be dropped right into the "action", so to speak, of him reuniting with his children.

i just love that you can basically just think of it what you want, i love that it didnt answer everything and that it brings up questions. it was completely unpredictable, and a pleasant change from the typical movies of the day.

Thinking about Inception with Ellen Page makes me think of Juno which makes me think of Michael Cera wich makes me think about this: Is it just me or does it seem that in every move he is in he is some dork going after a girl?

yeah, he's basically typecasted now. apparently that's the only way to break into the business now. find a role you're good at, star in 20 movies as the SAME character, take your money to the bank.

Every movie trailer that he stars in can basically shows him as some high schooler in love with some girl and he is really quite and humble who like to wear striped casual jackets. He might also be a super hero or something.

Oh, I loved the movie, too!

But, how did he realize he was in reality? The top stumbled, but every time during the movie it fell rather quickly. This spun for a long time and we never actually see it topple.

I'm going to see it again with friends who haven't seen it to try and gain a different interpretation, but I really don't think I will. Just an awesome movie amd it's great that it's left us wanting more.

We don't see it topple, but in the other dreams, it was flawlessly spinning...it didn't stumble at all.

Not to mention, the remembering how he got to where he was. Why restate that a bunch of times during the movie only to say that the rule is not "in play" later on?

I think it's interesting to discuss, but I don't think the it's all a dream theory has as much evidence as the reality theory.

Oh and to me, this movie makes all the people creaming themselves over Avatar look silly. Inception is 1,000 times better.

there was nothing amazing about avatar. it was a reused plot with a lot of bells and whistles. "OOOOH pretty colors!" and that's it. nothing amazing.

I really disliked that movie. The story sucked, I didn't care about any of the characters, and it was 30-45 minutes too long.

it really was just a recycled plot line...very similar to Dances With Wolves and a few other things. i was SO happy that it basically got shafted with the awards this year. i saw every movie nominated for Best Picture, and although i thought Precious was better, Hurt Locker was amazing, so much better than Avatar.

Another question...how, then, at the end of the movie, when they are in Fishers dream, does Cobb's projection enter the dream...the train entered level one...

Just to play devil's advocate, most plots nowadays are recycled. It's very, very difficult to come up with genuine inspiration, as Cobb would put. I didn't think Avatar was a great film, but it was entertaining in its own right. One of the biggest knocks seems to be the familiar storyline.

Has anyone on here seen Paprika? You can always make an argument that a movie is using a recycled plot. :D

Okay, I'm done. Inception was fantastic, by the by.

oh, i certainly agree that most plots are recycled ideas with a minor twist...but that's why writers should strive towards being unique. i don't think that it's a fair assessment of a movie to call it 'one of the greatest of all time' (ie Avatar freaks) when it's not even a unique plot. the ones that go down as the greatest are the ones that stand out on their own (or were at least the first in their own genre before the copycats.

Exactly, and that is becoming more and more of a rarity. Avatar took something that had been done before, and changed up it up VERY slightly. Inception did the same thing essentially (Dreamscape, Paprika), but did it a lot better.

Did you notice Cobb's wedding ring?

no, it's been mentioned however. i'll google it to avoid spoiling it for those that haven't seen it.

EDIT: OH SNAP! that actually makes me feel MUCH better about the movie. because the whole time i wanted him to get out you know? to finally have his real life back. i still like to think they let the totem hang so long because they want you to see that it's more about him not caring anymore than whether or not it's a dream, but i like knowing that.

I noticed it the second time I saw the movie. I was on the edge of my seat during the ending scene! Great stuff.

Also, this is pretty cool.
