i think my biggest issue with baseball is the fact that im just impatient...the buccos have sucked for basically my entire life and are just barely getting to the turning point (i HOPE), with the pens i only had to endure like...6 years of mediocrity/sucking before the turn around came...i'm SICK of hearing 'in a few years' and having to wait to watch a prospect choke in their major league debut. i really really feel like this is finally the start of the 'neXt generation' (sorry penguins PR department for stealing that 'gem'), but the disappointment has taught me to never get my hopes up too much.

well, i'm always impressed that he's able to step up as a starter and put forth a decent game. he really surpises me. sadly he's been the closest to consistent we've seen. that is until the 6th inning. most of his bad outings come when he's left in just a little too long (something russel is HORRIBLE at)

sounds confusing, thank. :D
so bottom line is, a top 5 pick will likely get you a stud, but he would probably be a couple of years away.

With the exception of a guy like Strasburg, everyone's a couple years away in the draft, regardless of draft position. Although, other guys who made the Majors very quickly include Justin Upton (stud) and Xavier Nady (really? yes!). Even a guy like Bryce Harper is a good four years away.

And a top two pick will almost always get you a study. Three through five are question marks. Everything after that is kind of like playing the lottery.

Karstens doesn't have a whole lot of raw talent, but he knows how to pitch. That's good for twice through the order, but his stuff isn't good enough to fool guys that third time through. You're right, Russel needs to recognize that.

As far as the Pirates on the trade front, rumors of Maholm to the Mets, Padres, or Dodgers. I have my fingers crossed for Dodgers because they have the least regard for their prospects of the three teams, and that would likely give us the best return.

There is also rumored interest by the Pirates in Diamondbacks catcher Ryan Snyder. Though I'm not sure why.

I won't be watching or following baseball any more than a cursory level until some sort of revenue sharing and/or salary cap is put into place.

i agree with your karstens assessment...i'm just always ticked off because even I know when it's time, and numbnuts is too busy spitting seeds to care (not a JR fan) and i saw the rumors for snyder, and i'm just confused...he's not a huge upgrade over what we have, so why even bother?

It would only be worth it if we get him for cash. Or if someone's interested in Doumit.

Also, the Pirates traded for Mitch Jones. Just cash. Not a bad idea. He's a career minor leaguer who might pull a Garrett Jones for us. He's hit a lot of home runs in the minors.

yeah...but the rumor also said that money was coming our way with Snyder...soooo, i'm guessing we're sending someone or picks. it seems like a move a contending team would do for depth. not the pittsburgh pirates.

I don't think the Mariners will be very busy tomorrow. The only 2 guys playing well enough (Ichiro and Felix) to warrant interest from contenders won't be traded.
