I don't follow baseball nearly as closely as hockey, so I have a question:
with the Mariners being so fucking brutal this year, is the draft rich enough that they will actually get a player that can turn the tide in a relative hurry?

You'd have to ask Darkstone about that. I don't follow college baseball to give you an answer about that.

I already posted this video in here but for the past few nights the Scrubs theme song (The real one, that is) has been intoxicating when I listen to it. No idea why. I never would want to listen to it again on TV

Huge pool of good hitters, especially college hitters, headlined by Anthony Rendon. I'm hoping the Pirates are bad enough to get the first pick to land Rendon, who, despite breaking his ankle, projects as the best bat out of the draft, and who right now is a plus defender at third base, but would likely be at least average there after this ankle injury. He's only a year or two (tops) away from the Majors, too.

Alvarez and Rendon on the corners for the Bucs would be absolutely epic.

As far as pitching is concerned, the 2010 draft was the one to go with. But it was so deep in pitching that the Mariners likely landed at least something. The Pirates did very well drafting pitchers, and I think they got 5 of the top 50 arms in the draft or something. Hopefully they get them inked.

It's also important to note that draft position only matters for the top four or five picks of the first round (if that) in the first year draft. After that, pretty much any player can go with any pick, as talent must be weighed against signability. That's why the Pirates and Nationals especially have done well in the last few drafts. They've been overpaying in later rounds for first- or second-round talent.

the the way the buccos look, i don't care if we just draft starting pitchers every freaking round next year. i'm always impressed with karstans...even tonight. although he needs to work on getting through the 6th and into the 7th

It's Neal's plan. Starting pitching is the most valuable asset to baseball organizations. Neal's got such a huge wealth of it in the low minors that, when the time comes for them to all come up, there are going to be extras, which can then be dealt for bats in over-value deals. It's how the Twins and Indians and Athletics have sustained cycles of success, and how the Rays suddenly became relevant. It's a great strategy.

sounds confusing, thank. :D
so bottom line is, a top 5 pick will likely get you a stud, but he would probably be a couple of years away.

It is conversations like these where I wish I was as big of a baseball fan as I was a hockey fan...
