well he got off to an ok start. then pitched 6 innings of shutout for the astros. last year he pitched a little better than he probably is. i just have no idea why they gave up on him. well maybe not give up however last year he did not even start in the postseason. they were waiting for him to hit a slump and he never did.

I think his GB% is too low considering he doesn't miss a whole lot of bats. He'll be a solid #3, but no more, in my opinion, unless he improves his curveball or slider. His fastball and changeup are both plus pitches, but his slider and curveball aren't. That's probably why both his GB% and ability to miss bats are low. Major Leaguers can hit good fastballs and changeups if all they have to worry about is speed variation. If he gets those breaking pitches at least to average, he'll be a #2. But right now he's a #3 or #4.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with that. Oswalt's just better.

His LOB% is ridiculously high, so maybe there's something to that, but if he continues to give up line drives and fly balls at the rate he is, his ERA will eventually inflate.

What's not to like? All four of his pitches are plus pitches, his ERA's never been higher than 4.12, and has been as low as 2.73, his FIP has never been higher than 3.80 and has been as low as 2.84, his xFIP has never been higher than 4.08, and has been as low as 3.22, his GB% is always between 42-50%, his fly ball percentage is always in the low 30s, he misses bats fairly effectively, his always a big plus WAR player, and has been worth 2.8 wins this season, which is pretty darned good. The only concerning number is his LD%, which is around 20, but he's been doing this successfully for so many years that it's clear that his high GB% and low FB% have negated that. He's also got very solid K/9 and BB/9 numbers. He's an ace.
