Who would've thought the Rangers would be 8 up on the Angels at this point in the year?

what? this year his numbers are better. he only has like 4 starts though.

Or are they?

Last year his FIP was 4.33 and his xFIP was 4.49. This year they're 4.59 and 6.00, respectively. His BB/9 are up and his K/9 are down. Those numbers have regressed to expected.

His ERA is definitely way lower than it should be based on those numbers, but I put more stock in FIP and xFIP, K/9 and BB/9, than I do in ERA.

Other things to note are that his HR/9 are down (a good sign, but outweighed by the extreme increase in BB/9 and small decrease in K/9), his LD% is down a little (a good thing), but his GB% is also down (a bad thing), and his FB% is way up (which means he should probably have actually given up more home runs than he has).

Just a surface evaluation. =)

And holy cow, last year Happ had a LD% of 18.6. That's pretty lofty, especially for an ERA of 2.93.

Perhaps he's the luckiest pitcher in MLB.

well he got off to an ok start. then pitched 6 innings of shutout for the astros. last year he pitched a little better than he probably is. i just have no idea why they gave up on him. well maybe not give up however last year he did not even start in the postseason. they were waiting for him to hit a slump and he never did.
