Not really. Does travel and schedule effect outcomes too much? It's not like you wear out over the course of a game like you might in hockey or basketball. You run less in a ballgame than a soccer player does in 5 minutes.

I saw the Pirates collapse forthcoming, similar to the dot com bubble burst. They were playing over their heads and couldn't maintain that level for too much longer.

I saw it coming because Maholm is the only pitcher on their staff, starters and bullpen included, who isn't on the verge of breaking his single-season personal high in innings pitched.

It wears on you. The amount of focus it takes to hit and pitch are very high. If you play too many games in a row without giving your head a break, you start to lose it.

When I played in high school, I got this just from practice. And we had weekends off.

A young team feels the effects of scheduling a lot more than a veteran team, too, by the way, because most of them are used to shorter seasons/are still adjusting to the length of a Major League season.
