Yep. All it does is add a bunch of low-paying jobs and adds to the tax burden when people start losing their shirts. Most of the money ends up in the hands of the casino owners/developers. Too bad the trend is going the other way. :(

putting the moral/social quandry of gaming aside:

heres the timeline on how our city/province has gone about things:

Wynn wants to build destination casino/convention centre

city/province says no to the proposal to expand gaming

city/province decides to build convention centre during height of construction boom when labour/material costs were sky high (project ends up costing just shy of $1 Billion)

city/province decides to expand gaming

all in all, it worked out quite well for the taxpayer (i know ... does it ever?)

Well, if the city was smart, they'd hand out a few prison sentences to the really mischievous cases to set an example and plea out all the smaller ones to fines to pay for the mess.

As for me, I enjoy a good rant. :)
yeah, it was premeditated by a few with selected targets, and then mob mentality took over because people are fucking idiots.
the difficulty is proving the former, as they can all use the defense that they were the latter.
but fining every single person involved would definitely work for me (my property taxes are ridiculous enough).

Vancouver is a tourist destination, and a stop off to other destinations (Alaska cruises, for example). imho, we should have some big-assed casinos to keep them here for an extra day or two. We already have some piddly ones, so it's not like we are introducing a new vice into the city.

the back story, fwiw, is that BC Place was renovated for about $400 million dollars, and the approved budget to pay for it was revenue from an expanded casino very nearby (there is already one of those piddly ones). However, when it came time to approve that casino (construction is almost done, btw), the same city council retreated to moral high ground and didn't approve it. So now tax payers have a surprise roof to pay for... and no, taxpayers didn't have a say in it, because we were not on the hook in the initial plans.

Pavco still owns the land around BC Place so some of the build costs will be (re)covered in a lower key hotel/casino development that will be built. Theyll close the nearby casino (Edgewater) and it will most likely move in to the new development with its existing casino license

I guess 250 slot machines are more palatable than 500 slots :noidea:

Note to British husbands... If you have recently hurt or insulted your wife in some way, decline an unexpected invitation for a camping trip with your brother-in-law.

Between you and me, sometimes even when I do not feel like listening to music I put on my headphones when I walk the dog to discourage the neighbors from talking to me.
