Be safe, Comeds, keep one hand on the Blackberry, one hand on the wheel, and always put down your mobile device when ashing your cigarette or grabbing another burrito.

It's also best not to text "Fuck u" to a police officer as you drive by him.

You could do it...

But you would have to do a lot of calculations to make sure both the bike and the truck were going at exactly the correct speeds...

Of course, people smart enough to do those calculations are also smart enough to not try to do that, so....

Yeah, that wasn't going to succeed.

The speed needed to get up over the ramp get about six feet of air and land on the landing ramp were it standing still would need to be +/- 15mph. Especially with the perfect arc on that ramp. Not very fast at all.

Looks like they had the van going faster than that, and since you can't roll at exactly zero on the bike to have the ramp roll under you...

It seemed to me that if I was going at the vehicle as slow as possible without falling over, I'd still be +/- 2mph. I figured that would not add to the moving vehicle's speed, it would multiply it. If the car was going 15, and I was going 2, it would be like me going 30 at the ramp. In my case, with a less vertical ramp, I figured at 15 mph, I would clear the car and land flat way behind the car. Flat landings after that kind of flight hurt even if you pull them off. The vertical ramp, 20mph van , rolling his bike at 2-3 mph means he hit the ramp at the equivelant of between 60 and 90mph. And he went about 25 feet up. And straight back down.

It's actually kind of comforting to see it and know that my physics dunce-ness calculations were apparently correct in a generic sort of sense.

So on night two of my brother's performance of The Phantom of the Opera, cell phones ruined what was otherwise a nearly flawless show. One rang. A bunch of others were on, causing interference with the sound system, which meant that the sound randomly cut out at a bunch of intervals.

What peeves me is that there is an announcement before the show that goes exactly like this, "Please turn off all celluar phones, as they will interfere with the sound system. Putting them on silent mode is insufficient, as interference will still occur as long as the phone is on."

Throughout the entire first act, the speakers cut out on the leads repeatedly. That means a lot of phones were on. You could only hear about half of the lines. What's a huge shame is that they were hitting the notes about 10 times better tonight than they did last night. The kids were incredible tonight, sounded nearly professional, but it was ruined by people with their cell phones on. If you think you're too important to turn your phone off, stay home.

Those kids practiced for several hours every day for three months to put on that show. They deserved everyone's undivided attention. My brother was getting home at 1, 2, even 3 in the morning this week because they were practicing for 10, 11, or 12 hours a day for the last week leading up to the show. That's so much work. And it paid off, because they were absolutely fantastic. But some people didn't respect that effort and detracted from their performace and the work they put in.

Fortunately, when they made the announcement after the second act, pretty much saying, "Because some people left their cell phones on, the sound system acted up throughout the first act. It is imperative that they be turned off for the second act," people actually listened (or at least most of them), and the microphones cut out a lot less in the second act.

And don't get me started on people carrying on side conversations, leaving the theatre in the middle of scenes, or people drinking from flasks and making absurd comments during the performance.

But the kids were spectacular, especially the actors playing Christine and the Phantom. The Phantom absolutely stole the show tonight. He hit every single note, and hit them with authority. Incredible.

I like the Einstein smiley. My girlfriend got me a book for Christmas; "E=mc^2: A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation."

Also, if you care to read my rant, I'm in a bittersweet mood. Really proud of my brother, who sounded great tonight, but pretty peeved at some jerks in the audience.

it's amazing to me how attached people have become to cell phones. i mean what did they all do before cell phones were around?

Mine's a convenience, but I don't need it all the time. In fact, I ignore it half the time, or just turn it off. But when I go to watch a show, movie, whatever, it's off. I'm there for that show or that movie. When I go out to dinner with someone, it's off, because I'm there for that person or those people. I think it's ridiculous to be otherwise.
