Well, for one the second shape doesn't align perfectly, so something is amiss. So there's wasted space there. When it comes down to it, they're just not geometrically equivalent.

His nose is also not as big, (nor as broken) as mine. So I guess he atones for his imperfect hair.

Yeah, the gif makes it look pretty convincing though. Notice on the 5x13 shape, the lines between shapes are thicker than they are on the 8x8 square. Helps hide that the shapes don't exactly match up.

It was actually the thickness of the lines is what initially drew my attention to the shapes not lining up, oddly enough.

I'm re-quoting this to make my point. The two lines bisecting segments are not drawn at the same angle, and yet the triangles they form are matched up into a "square." That's where the discrepancy lies.

If you assigned slopes to the lines (each drawn within the same axis), one would be 2/5 and the other would be 3/8. Thus the angles are different.
