I worked at a restaurant that he would eat at often. One time, we didn't have a private table for him, so him and his wife sat in the middle of the crowed dining room. Nobody bothered him. When he got up to leave, he started shaking hands and passing out Yankee-American Flag pins and shook a bunch of hands. Someone yelled out really loud, "You were great in Seinfeld, George!" The whole place erupted with laughter, and he actually bent over and held his stomach because he was laughing so hard.

True story.

That is awesome!

I have a few stories about him - all fantastic. He once asked me if I ever went to any of the Yankee games at Legends Field. I told him that I could never get a ticket because they were always sold out. Two days later, someone came in and gave our manager 36 tickets - 6 tickets for the next 6 games. We all signed up for them and went.

Not my story, but just as I remember him...

And the Salvation Army also has great respect for Steinbrenner. Officials there say they got to see a different side of him during Hurricane Andrew.

Steinbrenner and a couple of his golf buddies saw Salvation Army crews loading supplies. They stopped and helped load a truck with water and then Steinbrenner himself drove the truck to Homestead.

"It's an amazing story to hear that someone like George Steinbrenner drove a truck from Tampa to Miami," says Steve Vick, Salvation Army General Manager. "But I think that's the kind of person he was; he saw the need and he helped."

Baseball should get a cap floor before they get a cap ceiling. Don't blame the Yankees because your team's owner (and there are about 15 of them) pockets well over $50M at the start of the year from revenue sharing and doesn't put a single cent of it towards the team.

I love the idea of basement as well as a cap. I think all leagues should have them. I cannot see either happening.

Sorry Ducks, just because the Rays have had success in recently doesnt change my opinion that the league needs some sort of competitive balance.
Sure if a low payroll team trades well, drafts well, and manages well then every once in a while they may compete with the large payroll teams who don't have to worry themselves so much with such 'trivial' matters - they can just throw money around instead.

8 Different Teams have won the last 10 World Series. It takes more than a big payroll to field a successful team. Look at all the failed teams with huge payrolls of the last decade.

Ok, so?
Yeah but it sure helps.
So?

We are just not going to agree, you obviously think that all is well in the MLB salary and payroll structure, and I obviously don't.
