Is this is a completely unusual event for that area? I can't say I've ever really remembered hearing about a major earthquake anywhere in Europe really.

There is quite a bit of seismic activity around Italy. It's a subduction zone, hence the volcanoes (Vesuvius, Etna, etc.). Not surprising that there would be an earthquake. I guess the magnitude is abnormal though.

Actually, just the opposite, Italy has had some pretty major quakes over the last several years (a really bad one in 2009 that killed close to 300 people).

To make matters worse, a lot of central Italy is made up of medieval towns with really, really old buildings on the sides of hills.

So when they happen, they are usually bad.
