I guess what I don't get is what exactly will this Arena do that the existing one doesn't, to such a large degree.

Still on Thin Ice? - Hour Detroit - January 2010 - Detroit, MI

Bluntly put, Joe Louis is a dump. Illich has been planning this dating back to as early as 2009. It's not his fault those in charge of Detroit couldn't do their part.

Thirty years ago last month, Joe Louis Arena opened amid controversy regarding fire- and building-code violations documented exclusively by The Detroit News. Those violations remain to this day, most notably the steep banks of exterior stairs of the 20,000-seat arena.

The violations were brought to The News’ attention by the late Fred Morris, a building inspector for Detroit’s Department of Buildings and Safety Engineering. Morris reported the numerous violations and said that none of the Detroit building inspectors would sign the legally required Certificate of Occupancy. However, Mayor Coleman A. Young (another Democrat) ordered the arena opened without the certificate, and the University of Michigan played the University of Detroit in a collegiate basketball game in the still-under-construction venue.

Anyone else want to take a stab at what a new arena will do that the old one won't with an answer other than "DEMOCRATS!"?

Yeah, I'm with 43 here. Douche move man. I mean, my team went down this path before, and they asked for money...but it was from a growing and healthy city. I doubt Illitch will get to the point of moving the team...that just won't happen...but he has to understand the city won't fit the bill. Like 43 said, it's the same size building moving to a place already built up...other than construction jobs, what is it adding?

Obviously my knowledge is from my city, but Detroit needs to follow the Pittsburgh model. They're very similar towns. The difference being the government tried bailing them out, and failed. They need to regroup and rebrand. Unfortunately, that takes a long freaking time. I can't even understand how to begin that.

Is it just Detroit that's funding the new arena or is it the entire state of Michigan? Given the current circumstances, probably not a good time to ask the city of Detroit to fork over $284 million, but considering how popular the Red Wings are, maybe the entire state could help out. Not saying a new hockey arena is completely necessary, but the Red Wings give Detroit & Michigan something to be proud of in a very dark time, maybe they could afford to support their hockey team, even tho they can't afford it.

I know that Illitch pretty much rules the good old boys club that is the owners (OK, maybe he's Darth Vader to Jacobs' Emperor), but on a topic like that, I'm pretty sure that the other owners would grow enough of a collective pair to put a stop to it.

I guess what I don't get is what exactly will this Arena do that the existing one doesn't, to such a large degree. The Wings sell out most games, and the existing arena employs people now. This new arena will not create jobs, it will move jobs.

The area he wants to put the new one has a football stadium and baseball stadium. This new arena will not revitalize an area, it will add to it. And eventually just create another big, empty building in the old location.

I don't think a new building will attract any more events than the existing arena because sell out capacity will be 2k+ less.

So the only thing a new arena WILL have the existing one doesn't is naming rights able to be sold.

Plus the way Detroit businesses usually handle construction contracts pretty much guarantees the construction money will not stay in the area.

In a healthy city, it's pointless. In Detroit it's almost criminal.

Ilitch is in constant competition with the Palace Entertainment Group for concerts, events, and conventions. A new arena has an appeal for acts an events. The dirty aspect to this is the Ilitchs ties to downtown Casinos and real estate speculation. A new arena in an area where he controls the real estate makes him even more wealthy. I would hate to pay for an arena that will boost property values and he gets a double dip benefit.

But the bottom line is a new arena helps Detroit the same way a new bride to Canada will.

The same Palace entertainment group that does waterparks and roller coasters? Seems to me like that is a different pool of money, but I don't know. A newer but smaller arena still doesn't seem like a knockout punch to that competition to me.

The real estate holdings are much more telling though.

edit: I see, a different group with the same name that owns the arena where the Pistons play. So this will actually be a THIRD arena. That makes it all better.

So if he gets his new arena, then the Pistons will want one too?

No disrespect to the Orientals but I think there is a lot of blame to go around besides just the Democrats, fingers should also be pointed at blacks, Jews, and redskins.

It will eliminate and repair 30 years of life endangering building code violations originally side stepped by the Democrat Mayor. It's literally that black and white. Sorry you wasted your life with your hand out. Your choice to be poor and lazy.

Thank you for telling it like it is, I am so tired of getting private messages from him asking things like "spare some change? I take Paypal©" or "I will gladly cut your lawn Tuesday for a handout today. I take Paypal©" or "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, give me some mother fuckin' change. I take Paypal©". Seriously, panhandling on a message board? How are we even supposed to pay him?

All those lazy Canadians have figu(o)red it out. And they don't even have buildings, only igloos.

Come on now, have you not read the news stories about the steep steps at the Joe devouring hockey fans on an almost daily basis?

I understand they are to blame for the loss of the Pontiac brand.
