Please don't even think of getting me started on this save the planet energy stuff. I have studied so much BS from both sides and could hold my own in any debated.

Research the data people! See what BOTH sides have to say be analytical then come to you're honest and own conclusions.

In this case I have, for me I just think the benefits outweigh the negatives in regards to CFL bulbs. Longer lasting and costs much less to power does it for me.

Maybe if I had kids and had to worry about them breaking the bulbs I might think twice about getting them. But I don't so I wont.

No worries man, not a lot to discuss really anyway. I like them and I use them. If you don't like them don't.

I hope you are getting better. Rest up! The playoffs are coming.

Ok first you know I have been listening to my Sirius radio too much when I see CFL and think Canadian Football League. I was thinking this was a novelty light

Second as some of you know (and anyone who reads further will know) I work in a medical lab. I used to work in the Tox department. One of our main tests was mercury levels. The Dr that oversees that lab hates CFLs because of the mercury in them.

incandescents have been partially banned already in BC ... ie retailers are only allowed to sell their remainig stock

saw a story on the news that people are now hoarding incandescents and if you havent got any yet ... youll have to search them out to find them (or go across the border to Wash. state)

Im all for the benefits of something outweighing costs and with all the stories about cfls, I was all on board but I stopped to think when i read the following

In a letter to The Vancouver Sun this week, Lisa Coltart, BC Hydro's executive director of Power Smart and customer care, highlights the savings that the 80 per cent of customers who have already have one or more CFL bulbs have achieved.

Their conversion has reduced annual demand by 600 gigawatt hours, the equivalent of the total consumption, Hydro says, of 50,000 homes.

That's an impressive number and it's a prime example of the principle that conservation should be considered a source of new energy and valued accordingly.

But here's one thing she didn't mention. There is more than one environmental value at play here.

Premier Gordon Campbell's Liberal government has committed British Columbia to reducing its output of greenhouse gases by 33 per cent from 2007 levels by 2020.

BC Hydro has calculated that once the new lighting regulations are fully in place, the net effect will be an increase, that's right an increase, of the equivalent of 45,000 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere annually.

We produce more carbon because of the heat that incandescent light bulbs produce. For three-quarters of the year, that heat is useful. So when we switch to CFLs, which produce much less heat, that heat has to be replaced. Carbon emissions increase because the electricity that is saved is produced primarily from hydro with zero emissions, while the replacement heat comes from burning oil or natural gas.
The calculation gets more complicated because of the electricity trading BC Hydro does with jurisdictions that use natural gas or coal to produce electricity.

The bottom line is still that Hydro's own calculations, released two years ago, are that we are going to be producing more greenhouse gases as a result of this change. If the provincial government believes, as it says, that climate change is the overarching environmental issue facing the world today, why is it forcing British Columbians to adopt a measure that will make it worse?

Energy Minister Steve Thomson wasn't available for comment on Tuesday. My guess is that, given the assessment that we are irrevocably on the road to CFLs, the government would rather not reopen this debate.

It's likely that the regulations that are effectively banning the Edison bulb are having the desired effect of driving manufacturers to come up with better alternatives. Certainly the choices available now are better than they were a few years ago.

But by overselling the benefits and playing down the problems of CFLs, their proponents have created a legacy of doubt that will make further mandatory measures a much harder sell.
