Cars, Electricity, Indoor plumbing were luxuries. Nearly no households even had phones.

Televisions, Air Travel, Most Appliances we take for granted had not been invented yet.

The Titanic was a recent memory.

Ronald Reagan was a year old. In fact, Kennedy, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush I and II, Clinton and Obama had not been born yet.

The Stanley Cup Champs were the Quebec Bulldogs who defeated Moncton on the backs of Paddy Moran and Joe Malone.

The Indianapolis 500 mile race had just been contested for the second time.

World War I was 2 years away.

The United States had just grown to 48 states.

And my grandmother, Katherine Louise Riddle was born. Tonight we drive to Baltimore for her birthday party tomorrow. She will be there.

She hasn't really known who she is or any of us are for about 18 years, but it is pretty damn incredible to think of all the stuff that's happened in her lifetime.

Thanks!

Two other things:

She was 48 When Cal Ripken Jr was born on the same date. He is now 52.

Oh. And Enzo Ferrari was not yet old enough to drive by modern standards. (He was 14).

A noble concept, but she's never had a drop of alcohol in her life. "Why do I need to pay money to drink something that'll just make me feel lousy in a few hours?"

She had similar feelings about Chinese food.

ok lets see..

it's 2012
1912
2-2 = 0, carry the one, 1-1=0, , see now it's gets tricky, carry the one? no don't carry the one, move the decimal... no carry the one, so 2 becomes one... DON'T HELP ME DAMMIT!!! no, no, no that's wrong, .. no ok, so 10-9-1, 1-1 = 100...
see remainder, move the pen a little to the right to account for the wind, calculating for the air speed velocity of a laden swallow (European, obviously, in this case), set the balance to equal Pi, divide by Pi, multiply by Pi, set circumference for the for the area under the curve...

100?

fuck.
nice!

My granny has 6 years to go to hit that still, she may out-live us all.

Biz, that was too tricky. Here's a simpler shortcut. Think of the numbers as they are read aloud:

twenty-twelve
nineteen-twelve

20 minus 19 = 1
12 minus 12 = 0

So, Granny 43 is 10 years old. Wow, for a grandma, that IS pretty amazing.

/enjoy your time with her, 43

That's a damn nice run by your grandmother. Wish her a happy century for all of us here. Quite an accomplishment.
