concerning the Houston Texans.

Everyone says the Texans just need a quarterback. If only they had a franchise quarterback.

My question is this:

What good is a "franchise QB" to a franchise who can't keep their QBs healthy enough to play 16 games.

Just look at my Chargers as a prime example. They have a very good quarterback, but the O line is in shambles. We can't run, we can't protect Rivers and as a result we are headed to another .500 season.

A true franchise QB, makes elite QB plays sometimes...yes...you need that guy to win consistently. OL...have to make some moves...players/coaches, whatever you need to do...fluke injuries...just buzzards luck...it happens.

Not in Houston. This franchise has a long-storied history of health issues at QB. Or have we forgotten when TJ Yates was starting for them in a playoff game.

If Cleveland is the place where quarterbacks go to die then Houston is the place where quarterbacks go to put their health insurance to use.

Zilch. I remember watching Steve Young play for the hapless Buccaneers. Dude wouldn't have lasted long if he hadn't moved to San Francisco.

Good point

But...you do have to keep trying. Moon held up okay...just in a bad cycle.

In all honesty, the way to build a team is not to get a franchise quarterback and build around them. It's to get an offensive line and then get a franchise quarterback to play behind them. A franchise QB is no good if he's getting his head smashed in every play. Either the future franchise QB rides the bench for a few years or you need to put them in a situation where they can thrive (good o-line, plenty of weapons), otherwise you're kind of screwed.

Not to fear Texans fans.... Case Keenum has returned to Houston!

Seriously, though, having a competent o-line and a QB who either eludes pass rushers or gets rid of the ball quickly are the most important factors in keeping a QB healthy.

When I think about Texans QBs, the most curious feature of that history is how Matt Schaub went from a guy who was pretty competent and relatively injury free for about five years to a guy who just couldn't play.

franchise QB is everything. You can't sustain a perennial playoff team without one.

It isn't part of the puzzle, it's the entire foundation to build a puzzle on.

Hell, Seattle has a pretty shitty line and most other QB's would have been knocked out many times. Wilson is a special kind of player that can survive and actually thrive despite his line trying to get him killed every game.

The right player for the parts you have is out there. Problem is there aren't 30 of them at any given time. Finding one and getting him on your team isn't easy.

Build up that o-line, take the cowboys route and draft heavy o-line for next few years. Somewhere in there draft a QB, let them grow together.

Sounds like we need to merge Dallas and Houston. Dallas Offense + Houston Defense = SB!

Ok so with that said, now looking back at the draft and not taken an OLman in the 1st how does that make you feel?

Huh?

The Texans are so new they're practically still in the box. Besides, David Carr and Matt Schaub were pretty durable QB's for the most part. Exactly how long is this long history of health issues at QB?

O-line is the most important part. They can allow an average RB or QB put up great numbers. It always comes down to the trenches.

Actually Matt Schaub was quite injury-prone in Houston. He came to Houston in 2007 but it wasn't until 2009 that he actually played a full 16-game season. In his 7 seasons in Houston, he played a full 16 game season just 3 times.
