If Vatanen returns to his former self that he was under Bruce Boudreau and before his shoulder injury then this trade tips in NJ's favor. Or maybe Vatanen just needed to get out from under the Randy Carlyle regime. In any case, Vatanen was a #5 with the Ducks and now potentially a #1 (3)? with the Devils. Also, if this bumps Lovejoy to the press box and Prout to waivers, then that is a huge addition by subtraction in the Devils favor as well.

Yeah, I like this a lot more for Anaheim right now than I do for NJ. Vatanen was good under Boudreau but, while a lot of it has to do with the team as a whole and in particular the defensive genius behind the bench, he hasn't been good at all in his games so far this year.

Interesting trade today, both Vatanen and Henrique are good players and should do a lot for their respective teams.

My take on the trade, Devils needed a top 4 defenseman, Vatanen fits that billing. His play has dipped since the Boudreau departure but a change of scenery/coaching may be what he needs.

Henrique has been wildly inconinconsistent for us and more and more gets outplayed. With Mojo coming back something had to give. At center you have Nico, Zacha, Zajac, Boyle with McLeod and Quenneville ready to take up a spot.

Both teams trading from positions of strength, both fill needs, I think it's a solid trade for both teams.

I watched the HBO documentary "Baltimore Rising" and felt both really sad and somewhat hopeful at the same time. The detective being shot and killed a couple weeks ago doesn't help though. Just a coincidence he was testifying against former officers the next day.
