You're still more likely than not to get a top 6/top 4 player at 4.

Also, most of those late 90s/early 00s drafts were awful after the first pick or two regardless.

For sure, but it's hardly a solid plan to expect 4th overall picks to turn your franchise around. No one on that list would be a franchise player, IMO. Johansen might get there but he hasn't yet. I guess Backstrom might be that level of player had he been drafted by another franchise.

I just always find it surprising to look at top 10 draft picks 10 years down the road and realize that despite all the draft hype they largely become 2nd line players. The NHL is a tough league. By and large you get Evander Kane types (in skill level anyway).

Did you know Sam Bennett is 20 years old?

Pfft. I'm no mathematician but he's probably old enough to be Jeff Skinner's father.

You and I went over guys drafted 5-15 a while back and the returns are far more balanced between successes and failures.

In a vacuum I'd always rather pick higher. The bust factor is pretty low at 4 whereas at 8-9 it's higher. So for that reason alone higher is always better. 4th is just not a slot where you consistently get a superstar. Always surprises me.

I know it's like...totally your opinion, man...but I would totally consider Bobby Lou, Backstrom, Petro and Jones as players I'd like to "build around".

And Johansen.

*sniff*

I'll wait until he shows his motor is permanently fixed.

I'm a HUGE Jones fan though.

I was big on him when I was working in the USHL. Would have taken him #1 overall a year before his actual draft year.

I think the issue is there is no such thing as one player to build your franchise around. Name one successful team that is/was built around a single player? Do the Pens have two Cups without Geno, Fleury/Murray, Letang etc.? Take Keith or Kane from the Hawks and is Toews everybody's go-to for "what a captain should be"? Montreal had both the best goalie and one of the best d-men in the league the past 5 years and they won a total of 3 playoff rounds in that span.

If the Oilers keep scoring 5+ a game 410 is on the horizon!

Should I start the Glen Gulutzan Death Watch thread?

/My goodness, I hope things can only get better from here.

Flames haven't been shut out yet. That's a positive.
