Five years this was supposed to be the guy to lead the Leafs to the promised land lmao
That’s a tough one.
Palmieri initiated contact, quite purposely so. And that contact came in the crease. I know that when it comes to GI, there is no "cut and dried". But that is close. He came out of the corner to bump the goalie. That’s a tough one.
Yes but have you considered that Patrick Roy is mad?Palmieri initiated contact, quite purposely so. And that contact came in the crease. I know that when it comes to GI, there is no "cut and dried". But that is close. He came out of the corner to bump the goalie.
Part of the issue is "Goalie interference" can be two different situations. A goal is not scored, and someone plows into the goalie, that can be a penalty at the refs discretion. The second - a goal is scored and the refs and a bunch of fucksticks in Toronto that have never played goalie get on a call and flip a coin as to whether or not the goalie was "interfered" with.
All the outrage is missing this gem earlier: Was challenged, found to be no interference and the goal stood. To me, this is more to the first situation. Had that puck not deflected in, that probably could have been two for slashing or goaltender interference, but somehow since the puck went in on a deflection it wasn't the same infraction? They always say on goal calls that the determining factor is if the goalie is able to "play his position" and on this one, by the letter of that definition, Elvis was not "interfered with". He was in position to guard the net, and watch the piss-poor shot go wide. It hit someone and went in from a direction Elvis never tried to make a move to get to, nor would he have been prevented from moving had he desired. THEN he he got squashed and slashed in the face. And you can't blame the D. Gubberson was trying to keep him away from Elvis. He just mosh-swam over him and smacked Elvis in the face.
So going back to the Palmieri one, I wonder if the ref was going to call the contact (situation 1), but since the puck went in, had to switch to coin flip mode (situation 2).
And on top of all that, you have to consider refs do sometimes gift makeup calls. Which could very well have happened here. I'd like to think the refs do review their work between periods with less pressure on them.
