Here is some great analysis as to why Atlanta is thought of again for the NHL.

In 2023, Forsyth County conducted a feasibility study for a potential NHL team at the corner of Ronald Reagan Blvd and Union Hill Rd. This study revealed that residents in a 12mi radius of the arena watched NHL regular season games 20% above the national average, playoff games 21% above the national average, and bought NHL merchandise 6% above the national average. All of this was being done without an NHL team in Atlanta to support. The region of this study is illustrated in the image on the left.

That area north of Atlanta is very densely populated as any suburban area. Most that live in that area would rather stay north vs having to go into Atlanta for any events.
