What we know: The ice is going to be shit. And the Panthers will be playing the Blackhawks.

The league should gift them another 1OA and give them another winter classic then.

I legitimately had no idea it was on NYE.

Same here. I didn’t know it was on either until I saw the rerun on the 1st.

Also this league is god awful at promoting starts. I guarantee you could ask 7 out of 10 from Chicago and they wouldn’t know Bedard or couldn’t even pick him out of a lineup.

It was up against the Stars & Sabres here.

Stars always play on NYE (except when they hosted “The Classic" at the Cotton Bowl).

So by default I didn’t watch “The Classic”.

The only people I know personally who watch the outdoor games are people that dont normally watch any games. So I guess it kinda works that way. However they dont watch any other games so it kinda doesn't too. Its not like they get hooked.

Outdoor games are like all star games, they aren’t really for the viewing public at this point but more for attendees.

I’ve gone to two of the Leaf outdoor games, the one at the Big House was still one of the best sports events I’ve been to (the “Centennial Classic” was a better game and I’m sure many had lots of fun the stadium in TO just sucks balls).

I’m sure a lot of kids who go to these leave pretty happy. I’m fine with a bunch of crappy promotion and overhype and Blackhawks games if it makes the kids happy and gets them more into the sport.

We are just not going to agree on this. I'd have no problem having the All Star Game be the outdoor game, that would almost make sense. Or have outdoor games that are not the tent pole nationally televised events (in the US at least) of the season. Its basically getting people to tune into an inferior product (and time lapse footage of the rink set up!) because its outside and expect people to continue watching. There is little evidence that they do.

Why not save some time and just advertise a game as an Ol' fashioned hockey game and just show the game in standard definition. Or just show one of the games in 3/4th speed with 20% of the screen being arena seats.

Is there another sports league thats marquee events are inferior versions of the normal product?

NFL playoff games in cold weather cities where a blizzard can result in some of the shittiest football that side of the Canadian border. It happens pretty much every year and even still teams like Buffalo are building new stadiums with no roof because everybody in WNY has lead poisoning.

You are correct most years there is a weather event that can affect the game and or broadcast of the game. Sometimes not thought. The ice is almost always bad in outdoor games, and the action is farther away with bad angles in the outdoor games. Just an inferior product in my opinion. Clearly I am wrong though. the league and I guess casual fans love them.

And if you dont think the outdoor ice is made with leaded water....I got a bridge I can sell you

I got a pre-sale invite for the game at the Shoe. The cheapest ticket was 80 bucks each and they were in the top ten rows, up by the scoreboard over the end zone. Has to be the worst the worst sightlines. The ones at center ice where you are still 20+ yards away from the glass are 500+

For 80 bucks at Nationwide, I can sit half way up the lower bowl. For 500, I can sit on the glass and eat in the diamond cellar club. And actually see hockey. Also, if our club wants to rent out ice time, it's 10 grand an hour paid to the league and we cannot get it until after the game. Each team gets one practice, then the game. That's it. I think that means the know the ice is going to be shit. I can't wait for the ice to be a slurpee.

I see why the league loves it. Can't see why fans do.

I went to the winter classic in Pittsburgh in 2010(?) it was the game played in the rain that was delayed a day and Crosby got his head turned to mush by Steckel. Watched the next years game at Fenway (IIRC) on TV. Haven't watched one since.

I will watch one again if there are no announcers, it has a normal camera angle and all the players and coaches are miked up and you can hear everything being said on the ice and on the benches unfiltered.

I have very few winter classic or outdoor game memories that stand out so here goes

That 40 below game in Edmonton
First pens slugs classic in the snow
Outdoor game at dodgers stadium had good ice
Game at big house
Games at lake Tahoe
Perry’s walk of shame

Those are all I remember of the outdoor games.

I watched about 5 minutes of the game the other day which is how long i probably watched the outdoor games of the past 5 years. I dont know how it would capture anyones attention beyond 5 minutes unless “your team” was in it.

I would think the gate revenue from these games is 5 to 10x (thats generous) a regular game. Its an event for those who attend but its not appointment viewing on television so Im not sure what kind of growth the nhl gets with exception of casuals who attend the games and then maybe will decide to go to a regular season game.

In summary i cant see this as a great revenue generator for the NHL. I think we’re at the stage that they dont want to pull the plug on them because they are scraping for any additional revenue they can get

My pie in the sky outdoor game would be one played on a glacial mountain lake with no fans in attendance lol will never happen but would be visually stunning
